Do you think that the traditional "walking to school" (or the bus stop) might have been a really GOOD thing, a good way for kids to start the day, get moving, etc?
We are all kind of sluggish in the AM. ( I always have been.) But I do remember having to walk to the bus stop every day growing up - and I wonder if it was actually good to start out the day with that outside, fresh air walk.
Opinions?

Perhaps it had less to do with the actual walk than with the motivation of having to get dressed and ready so you don't miss the bus/arrive to school late?
We have been going to daily mass for a few months now, and even though my boys are only 4 and 2, it is a major motivator for the whole family (my husband goes with us, too, before work) to get up and get ready every morning.
Plus, we park on the side of a church that is next to the adoration chapel which means a tiny bit of a walk into church and back (so we can stop for a visit in the chapel afterwards); so, I can't discount the value of being outside (my boys always discover some sort of nature on that short walk: spider webs, rolly pollys, birds feathers, etc...--in a place I would never think to intentionally go to find it). So, that to say, I can't say a bit of a walk outdoors isn't part of it.
However, I find, maybe in forcing a flylady-like discipline (yk, getting dressed to your shoes to start the day) it gets our routine started. Of course, the graces from mass are a wonderful way to start the day, but I think part of the benefit is that it requires us to actually *start the day* if that makes sense.

Yeah, I'll buy that. In Waldorf schools, all the kids start the day with a 30 minute walk outside to get centered for the day and to get the willies out.

My sil used to make her kids ride their bikes or walk around the block every morning before school. Her thinking was that they had previously gone to public school and had to walk or ride their bikes to get there. The lap around the block was probably a great way to get the woken up and ready to go. I'll have to try something like that. We live in the country so our block is 4 miles around, but maybe I can think of an alternative.

We use "run to the end of the dead-end street and back" for those times when transitions are difficult or they're just too wiggly.
Also when you consider agrarian societies.. you generally have chores of some sort before eating breakfast (since mom's chore is making said breakfast).
