Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm looking for a book about working/playing with clay for young children. The books I've found at our library are more for older children.

Anyone have any titles to suggest?

Dawn

I just ordered this one; it hasn't arrived yet, but I'm looking forward to trying out the ideas.

Mudworks by MaryAnn Kohl

(Here's another one by the same author: Preschool Art: Clay and Dough)

I've looked at Mudworks before...it is basically lots and lots of different recipes for play dough and clay and different suggestions for experimenting with those mediums.

What I'm looking for is something that is more project-oriented, but with projects that 4-6 year-old children could do.

Or would it be better to just let children that age experiment?

I'm not a clay expert, but I think children that age are going to need a lot of help with any "project." My own preference would be to teach them some basic pottery techniques, then let them experiment themselves. Here are some ideas, in rough order of difficulty.

Rolling the clay into a ball
-> making a "pinch pot"

Rolling long "worms"
-> coiling them into a flat circle
-> building them up into a coiled pot

Rolling flat pieces
-> cutting them out with a cookie cutter
-> cutting them freehand
-> building a box or house from flat pieces (this won't work with play-dough, of course, as it's too soft)

At any stage, you can add in the following:

Use of glazes and paints.
Use of various decorations: beads, sequins, etc.
Use of simple clay tools for shaping and decorating

BTW, you don't say what type of clay you're using, but I just came across Magic Mud, which we're definitely going to try. (The above site is by the woman who developed the clay, and has lots of good information -- but for some reason the shipping charges are coming up as astronomical. The clay itself is also available from Dick Blick and other art & school supply stores.)

Oh,yes, I've already ordered the Magic Mud from Rainbow Resource Center! I'm looking forward to playing with it myself!

Thanks for the tips, Eleanor. That gives me a good place to start. :)

We just tried out our Magic Mud, and it's every bit as much fun as advertised. I also really like the Magic Mud Parent/Teacher Guide. (It's free with the 25 lb. clay, or $3 if bought separately.) Although it's only 20 pages long, it's packed with information... pretty much all you'd need to know to help young children be creative with natural clay, starting with the very earliest stages of exploration.

Forget my post above; I hereby defer to the booklet!
