Okay, I hesitate to post this here because I don't want to offend anyone. I am getting ready to put in an order from some reference books and I am hemming and hawing over a few. Hopefully, Cay and/or others can help me out. What makes "Picture Perfect Childhood" different than books like "Honey for a Child's Heart," "The Read Aloud Handbook," "Books that Build Character," and the others like them? If I purchase this book, what am I going to glean from it that I can't or haven't from the others? If I have the others (and I do) should I purchase this book or do I have it covered?
It is really hard for me to purchase a book that I have not had my hands and eyes on first. I need some good solid reasons to take the leap of faith that I will not be able to live without it once I have it! Hmmm... I guess it's not a leap of faith, technically, if I have good solid reasons.
Anyway, thanks in advance for the help! And I apologize if this is a redundant conversation. I have a vague feeling that we have talked about this before, but I can't find it.
Blessings,
Betsie

Sorry! I think this should be in Picture Book Discoveries, but I hit the wrong line! Please move it if needed!

Well, I have Picture Perfect Childhood and I almost began ripping the house apart the other day when I thought I had lost it. I had carried it to doctors' appointments and swin lessons and was afraid it had been left. I gues that's a pretty good testimonial.
I have or have read the others you listed and feel like they all have the standard, classic children's books listed. Cay's book has many different lists. The first ones are based on months and a lot of the books listed relate to an historical event or person born in that month. Then for each month she also lists an art, music, poetry, LA, science, Shakespeare, math, geography, fairy tale, myth and tall tale book. There are also lists that relate to virtues, countries, states, cooking & food, and many, many more.
I like it because I can open it to the upcoming month and that is my starting point for reserving books at the library. This was how I found my new, favorite, picture book (A Packet of Seeds).
Hope this helps, I've made plenty of bad decisions when ordering books, but this is definately not one of them!

Bethany's answer made me
But Betsie,I can't tell you if you should or shouldn't buy PPC but I'm sure glad you asked.
I wrote it in hopes that people would love it and be blessed by it like Bethany just shared. Sounds like she made a good investment.
Will it be that kind of investment for you? I certainly hope so.
I have all the books you mentioned and they all inspired me, motivated me, and mentored me. But I knew we didn't need just "another" booklist book on the market. The books you mentioned pretty much house that whole department.
Before I had my book published I even asked myself if this was just another book? because that was my biggest fear. If I had answered "yes" to that question, I wouldn't have published it.
So I set out to do something I love, something I'm passionate about, something my children and I live and breathe around our house, and something that was different to offer to other hsers.
The lists offered in the book are different. I'm pretty sure they're differnt from anything you've seen before. And I think you'll find them fun and entertaining and refreshing and motivating to your school and to your own rabbit trails.
But I also hope (and pray) that people see beyond the lists that are in the book. The lists are only an addendum to the inner workings of the book. There are a variety of essays that I hope (and pray) speak to the heart of mothers and prompts them to explore the world with their children through the world of picture books.
The other books will offer you a lot of meatier, higher reading level books. PPC offers you to the chance to breathe, to pace the rabbit trails you follow with your child, and to enjoy the trail instead of feeling as though there's too much all the time.
Again, I can't tell you if you need this book or not. Some of my friends can. You'll find some reviews at the Amazon link and more reviews here.
I hope the reviews answer most of your questions.
And, in closing, do picture books work with older children? My experience has been "Yes" but let me share someone else's experience with PPC and her 15-yr-old dd. My IRL friend Wendy just shared this this morning on her blog
Picture Perfect Time Travel with Nellie Bly.

I agree with Cay and Bethany. The lists offered in Picture Perfect are so different from the other booklist books. I had never heard of 3/4's of these books before. I LOVE the monthly lists. They are phenomenal!

Oh, good! I love both of those. PPC was a great resource when I started planning our vacation. I could go through their different topics and find ones that would be good to have for our trip or to have already read by the time our trip started. We bought a beautiful book about the Gettysburg address that way that we would not have known about with Cay's list. I love all that's in the book. It's a wonderful resource to have and I use it which can't be said for some of the other books I have that have booklists.

I asked my library to order PPC, as all the books they have on the subject all seem to have the same lists over and over. And we've already read Blueberries for Sal a billion times.
Failing that, I plan to ask for a copy for my birthday. One way or another, I'm getting a copy!

Well, it came yesterday, just in time to cheer me up from the accident! After about 15 minutes of perusing, I fully decided that I was 100% happy I bought it. I can't wait to free up some room on my library holds list to request some of the books! And I have to agree that I LOVE the monthly book list feature. I took it with me to VBS this morning to show my friend and I think she may well have ordered it this afternoon. It is a great book, thanks for talking me into it!
Blessings,
Betsie

So, our fist round of holds came in at the library and we had a great time reading the past few days. I requested the pizza books from the Cooking With Literature August section and they came in today. We're going to read them this afternoon and then make pizza for dinner tonight. Everyone is very excited. But I have one serious bone to pick with this book...Where are the books about Brussels Sprouts? My kids are very disappointed that we will not be reading books about Brussels Sprouts and then cooking them for dinner. They are requesting a rewrite .
Actually, I did discover one thing that I wish were different about the book, but I can rectify it on my own. It is very hard to hold the book open while looking up the books on the computer. I really wish that it was spiral bound, so I think I will hot foot it over to Staples and have that done!
Thanks, Cay for such a great book. It has a place of honor on my desk right next to Real Learning.
Blessings,
Betsie

Chimming in late here. Take other homeschool booklist books and add one secret ingredent, a dear friend talking to YOU!
Unlike other homeschool booklists I own (there's a few now ) this one makes you feel like your chewing the cud as we would say Texas with a good friend. Cay truly personalizes her writing. You literally feel she wrote it just for you.
Take passion and thow a lasso around the moon and try to contain that. That's what it's like reading her book. It just fills ya.

So glad you chimed in, Linda! You capture in words something hard to capture in words, Cay's generosity, passion, knowledge, and *real*-ness. Combine this with picture perfect books and...well...we are abundantly blessed!
Love,

Thank you, ladies. I'm so happy PPC has blessed so many homes.
I hope you're feeling better, Linda.
I'm glad this was bumped because I had forgotten Betsie's "spiral bound" suggestion. It is a great suggestion and something to consider. Thank you, Betsie.
If you're still wondering about the grander use of picture books in your homeschooling, just take a look-see at a link found in my friend's blog which talks about using The Oxcart Man to teach economics.
I'd also like to remind everyone that a percentage of sales will go towards the purchase of new picture books to be donated to St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, TN at Christmas time.
If you'd like some of your Christmas money to go to a good cause, buy a copy of A Picture Perfect Childhood now and enrich another child's life while enriching your own home.
