Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do you ever try to figure out what is attacking your garden? I've had a few ripe tomatoes swiped. I found one on the other side of our fence with only half the outside remaining, eaten almost like an apple. We have lots of little wildlife in our little suburbs. So what kind of critters will actually remove LARGE tomatoes to eat? No cherry tomatoes for them!

My temporary fencing is back up. I don't know if it will keep them out, but we've only gotten to eat two of them, as they are just now ripening.

And why do these critters seem to be picky and know to only pick the juiciest ripest ones?

Haven't seen any tracks or prints.

Dear Jenn -- I had that problem a couple of years ago and noticed "scratch marks" on my privacy fence which made me think raccoons or squirrels. Rats may destroy ripe tomatoes , but generally the tomato will still be on the plant, but with nibbles taken out. I was also told at the time that birds (mockingbirds and jays specifically in our area) can do a "fly by" taking a swipe at ripe tomatoes and fruit, but that would not explain your tomatoes being found in another area.

I solved the problem this year by picking my tomatoes when they had just a "blush" of pink on them, and then letting them ripen in the house. Worked for me..

It could be LOTS of things! Everything from rabbits to rats to raccoons to possums to squirrels to deer!
Once I was desperate to figure out what was eating my ripe strawberries before I could pick them and I found MY OWN DOG standing in the bed eating them right off the plant!

You may want to try putting some netting over them if you can. But it is so tough to keep the little guys out! I sympathize!

That's funny about your dog, Theresa. I thought I could whittle the list down a little since the a) the tomatoes were large and b) they were removed from the plant and c) where and how the remaining parts of the tomato was found.

Just trying to be detective. But I think I might pick them a little early and ripen indoors. Not exactly the same taste, but I'd rather be able to eat some tomatoes!
