Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm looking for a beautifully illustrated Aesop's Fables for my 1st grader. I'd love it if Tomie De Paola had one, but he does not. I'd like the complete fables. Any suggestions? How is the Milo Winter version?

The Milo Winter one has 126 fables so I think it is pretty "complete." Not sure how many there are total.

Like Suzanne mentions in this past thread on the topic - the wording of the morals of some of the other versions is slightly different giving a different readability.

I also really enjoy the Pinkney one Suzanne mentioned in the other thread. Don't know how complete it is - Suzanne may jump in with numbers.

The Charles Santore illustrated version is beautiful - especially if you get the large size edition. I have a smaller size but my friend has the larger size - the pictures are amazing. It is pretty complete but not as many as the Winter one - has about 80 fables.

I also have Unwitting Wisdom: An Anthology of Aesops's Fables. Its illustrations are exquisite. The format is really different and very dramatic. First there is a two page spread mostly illustration with a short lead in title/phrase - For example: Size Isn't everything...in which a mouse unexpectedly returns a favor leads into the fable of the lion and the mouse. The second two page spread is the text of the fable with smaller illustrations in the borders. It only contains 12 fables though .

The Pinkney one has probably about 60-70. Which is enough for us. The Milo Winter one does have A LOT!

I LOVE LOVE the Santore illustrations too! But, now that my girls are reading a bit on their own, they have a hard time reading that "Papyrus"-type font. Not a big deal, since it's usually something that I read out loud. But, worth mentioning.

I have been really impressed with the Milo Winter one!

I decided to get it, because it was so widely recommended, (and we were going to do an Amazon order in any case). We've been reading it this year, and Puggle _loves_ it! Partly it's the language (and the length of each fable), but it's also the artwork. There's not quite one picture per fable (there's usually two or three fables per double page, and usually two pictures in the same space), and they're lovely.
