When is a good age for teaching them about how to read maps, compass all about land formations etc.

What would be a good, fun program for a 1st grader?

Any suggestions would be helpful as I've decided to postpone history one more year and focus on learning about geography.

We do this mostly informally at this stage:   

My husband has shown them a compass and they each have a cheapie one. When we go for a walk around the neighborhood, they take it with them sometimes.

When driving or walking talk about what direction you're going.

We use the 3-part-cards (montessori) for land formations, but it's not a big hit over here.

We've made a map of our neighborhood and our yard.

Many things are picked up from reading a vast assortment of picture books and read alouds.

Liturgical year celebrations have lots of opportunities for geography learning.   

Get into the habit of placing clay or dough on the spot on a globe or wall map whenever you read a story to show where it is.
