Oh my goodness. Overnight we went from our nice, sweet, loving baby girl to a non-sleeping, fit throwing 2 year old! Saragh used to be so lovey and sweet and gentle and over the last couple of weeks has turned into someone I don't even know .
She has been, hands down, our best sleeper. From 8 months on we could plop her into bed, kiss her good night and close the door and we wouldn't hear a peep until the next morning. Now, all of the sudden, she is throwing fits and crying for 2 hours after we put her to bed. She is also refusing to nap half of the time which is truly annoying.
We installed a new play structure a couple of weeks ago and of course there is a baby swing for her. However, she never wants to be OUT of the swing! My dh pushed her for 40 mintues last night and when he took her out (with warnings, "I'll push you 5 more times and then we going to be done!"), she threw a massive fit for 2 hours!!! She threw another fit this morning when I told her she would have to wait until the boys were done with school before I would push her. This, of course, led to school being elongated by about an hour while we all tried to deal with her and continue with Michigan history!
So, after we all throw a pity party for me , does anyone have any advise or words of wisdom? Is there any hope of getting my sweet little girl back? I am so saddened by this huge change of character. Thanks!
Blessings,
Betsie

I just went through 'the change' with my two year old when he was working on giving up naps. Now that I have finally stopped forcing him to nap and he has adjusted, he has returned to being the LoveBug (and willing falls to sleep in seconds at bedtime.)
Prayers for you and yours.

Okay, so I'll whine a bit. I don't WANT her to give up her naps yet! It's great to get a bit of quiet time in the afternoon when the older kids could play and the baby was napping. And she takes 3 hour naps! I think she should nap until she is 10!
She as actually napped far longer than any of her sibs. They were all done with naps around 18m. Maybe I should scrap naptime and see if that helps. Thanks!

Betsie,
Is there a way for you to have quiet time (say with a book on tape or a few books while she lies in bed) without the expectation that she sleep? This would allow you still to have more time with your boys for their play and, if she needs it, for her to fall asleep on her own. My babies are much more likely to throw fits when they are tired so they may be related.
HTH,
Michelle

I know exactly what you mean! I did say that he had adjusted, not me. I could use the two to three hour nap still. (In fact I should really be in bed now making up lost sleep, but...)

Well,my hubby and I talked about it last night and think this is a combination of several things; phasing out of naps, teething (canines), and maybe a growth spurt plus that nasty 2yo change. Still no solutions, but at least I can blame it on something and maybe have a chance to make it through the day! She woke up all joy and sunshine this morning, so we'll see!

My two year old just gave up naps too! Ugh! That was my sanity and prayer time. Oh well. I guess we just have to go with the flow.

Ugh - I have found that with all four of my kids who have gotten canines so far, that was by far the worst time for them. They must hurt a lot - more than the other teeth! They seemed to improve behavior wise after they came in (although that isn't saying much for my 3yo who went from impossible to just extremely difficult, LOL!)

All but my 1st gave up naps around 16-18 months (#4 is only 14months and sometimes misses his or only takes a 20 minute catnap)
When my only dd hit 2, she did many of the same things you describe. If I thought she was especially hurting from teeth, she got Ibuprophen before bed. Luckily she loves to take "medcin".
I always have to make sure she is well fed or she really hits a bad spot. She was also very frustrated that SHE had a million things to say and ask for, but WE only seemed to understand about 30% of her words and wants (this is an average of mommy understanding 50% and daddy 10% )
Can you do any school outside? Like read alouds or math drills with the olders while she does get to swing? And maybe this is a "season" with her that you have to give a little extra of hugs and comforting. My dd is coming out of her phase luckily...she's 2.75 now.
Oh, and just ditch Michigan history...like who cares! Just kidding...I'm in OHIO..go Bucks Good luck, and this season shall pass, but it sure is a LONG one!

Betsie:
Keep a large bag of Peanut M&Ms for when *you* feel the need to melt down. They'll put you back on track.
Honestly though, I *do* believe this is a season in her life. Some of my kids have addictions (like your swing addiction) to certain things. For my 2 yog it's having to wear several layers of skirts and nonmatching clippity-clop shoes right now. Unless we're going somewhere, she wears these things. She doesn't put up a fuss when she has to wear something "sensible" because she gets plenty of multi-layer skirt and clippity-clop time.

Oh yes! Saragh cannot get enough of flip flops right now! Actually, shoe in general. If we come anywhere near the shoe department in a store, off come her shoes and she demands to try on every other shoe in sight!
Thanks for all your insight and encouragement. Today was actually much better. We weren't outside because of the heat and I didn't put her down for a nap. She is sleeping peacefully across the hall and will hopefully stay that way until well into the morning (yea, I know, wishful thinking!)
Blessings,
Betsie
