Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can anyone tell me what level reading this is? I see it listed on AO for either year 3 or 4 but then I see that MODG uses it for there Natural History syllabus that I believe is a 9th grade subject. I am thinking about having my 11 yo son read it.

Thanks,

Natalia

The ones by James Herriot? There are the picture books that would be great for the younger set, but the books themselves are much more mature. We love ACGAS, but we had to discuss the VERY frequent use of the Lord's name in vain.
FWIW.

ACGAS is in the adult section of the library. You could probably check into it there before you buy. It's a pretty classic book. My dd 10 still enjoys the children's stories. We have James Herriots Treasury for Children. They are still appropriate for upper elementary. Would just depend on your son. HTH, Valerie

Update:

Just googled "accelerated reader" "all creatures great and small" and found it had a reading level of 6.8. Meaning 6th grade 8th month. I had forgotten that is how I find the reading levels of different books.

Natalia,
My dd read all four when she was 11. We are now watching the TV series on DVD in the evenings. We love them. There is drinking at the pubs, etc... and a bit of British swearing but overall, the stories are quite moral and uplifting. You might consider pre-reading a few chapters just so you could get an idea of what the books are like...you will probably get hooked!

That's about the age I started reading them. They are so delightful. So many times young girls with their love of horses want to be vets because of reading these books around the same time.

Thanks y'all!

I am not familiar with the books at all. I read the Treasury for Children to my now 11yo when he was 6 or 7. But we have never read the other books. What are the titles of the other books?

hsmom,
That is a great idea for finding reading level thanks!

It's a series, the titles based on a hymn:

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.

I'm dating myself, but the first three came out as a trilogy, boxed set. Then came The Lord God Made Them All and later another book Every Living Thing.

The audio books read by Christopher Timothy are a treasure too. He plays Alf Wight (James Herriot) in the popular BBC version. We just love the books and the show. Wight once commented on how well the show was made and how it brought back such memories for him. He said the show when they are collecting payments for their services was especially accurate.

This is also a treasure for fans.

Maddie,
Shame on you! I just one clicked your suggestion--it looked so tempting to me and I know our two oldest and my dh will also love it!

My children enjoyed the audiobooks while we drove 12 hours last summer.

I love them. I have all the books and the audio as well. Every Living Thing is abridged, I believe. My middle child is named after one of the characters.

We have enjoyed all three media--book, audio and TV series. Brilliant, poignant, funny, these are family favorites. The books are both a love story (Herriot and family) and a love story (his life, job and environs).

Can we guess? Did you name your middle child "Mrs. Pumphrey?"

I think my love of these books was a big factor in my going on to become a vet

I've tried reading them aloud to my oldest ds, around age 13, and he was bored and disgusted (he's very squeamish). Hope at least one of my younger ones ends up liking them.

We just did MODG's Natural History last year, 9th grade, but I don't remember this being part of it. They had Swiss Family Robinson, King Solomon's Ring and Fabre's book of Insects. Maybe ACGAS is in the Biology syllabus?

My ds read this last year at age 12 and really enjoyed it. It is not at all the sort of book he would normally read (he majors in fantasy/action type books) but he had exhausted our shelves and was bored, so I pulled it out.
