Well our newest addition arrived July 2nd, a little over 3 weeks early! She is of course adorable...however, she is not a great nurser! We (dh, me and dr) didn't realize that she really wasn't gaining weight and was underfeeding. Because of this, my milk supply has been terribly diminished. I am now nursing (but because she is a "preemie" and doesn't suck well, she doesn't get much from this) and then pumping. Then dh gives her a bottle of breastmilk to be sure she gets her ounces. We had to resort to this as she became dehydrated late this past week and it was do this or go into the hospital for iv!
Anyways, we are all working hard around the clock and praying that my milk supply will go up with continued pumping and stimulation from her. The lactation consultant said it could take weeks!!! UGH!
Your prayers are much appreciated!!

I did six weeks of this with Maria (she was tongue tied, and I have large appendages, she a small petite mouth ) and I will tell you- it was SO HARD!!
I feel for you, I honestly was pumping, bottle feeding, attempting to latch on 24/7. and then, finally, it worked!
I will be praying hard for you. hang in there., and congrats on your little one!!

Our update is we went with the formula and bottles. It was a hard decision. We had been working hard on the breastfeeding, this included dh too. He would sit and watch over my shoulder like a hawk to help her stay latched and to not slow down. But she showed signs of dehydration again! This was frustrating, and I could tell my dh was very frustrated and tense and worried. Basically the drs had given us three days to bulk up her weight or they'd admit her for testing.
So with lots of tears we decided to just go straight to the bottle and formula (I couldn't pump enough to make it worth it anyways). Within two feedings she had urinated (something she hadn't done for hours and hours) and had a bm (something she hadn't done for days) and she was way more alert. All of that brought us a lot of peace about the decision. I had 3 miscarriages before she was born, we decided why freak out over the nursing, we are just so incredibly happy she is here, we'd feed her bananas if that's what it took to make her thrive, kwim? And within 3 days she gained back 7 oz and made her birth weight plus 1! Yeah!
Anyways, I feel like a first time mom because we've never done bottles before. I also have issues of pride going on (pray for that for me!) because I feel like everyone I know breastfeeds, so did I! And I know I was judgmental (in my mind, I never voiced it) towards women who I saw used bottles. This whole thing has been real test of our humility.
So I'm rambling...thanks for your prayers! Bottom line, we couldn't cut the nursing, but she is thriving and that's what we are most happy about!

Dear Kacky - I have been praying for you. You have a wonderful attitude - your little one will do just fine on formula (just look at my twins - preemies who I had to give formula to) - and will be just as loved as if you nurse her. I will pray for you not to worry about what other people think or beat yourself up. And I so agree with you about just being happy about her being here.
I think that what kind of birth you have and the nursing aspect are so secondary to the wonderful miracle of just having another one - in both cases you need to just do what is best for baby, mama and the rest of the family.
Hugs

I can totally relate, Kacky--I wasn't able to nurse my daughter, and it was my husband who finally got me to let go of that guilt and just enjoy my little one for the miracle that she was (and is!). Praying for all of you!!

Oh, Kacky! I've been praying, and I'm so relieved to hear that she's doing well. What a relief it must have been for you and your husband!
I'll pray for your intentions and for your littlest. I can really empathize! But, you're right, in the end you just need to meet her needs in the best way you can! Thanks be to God for her!
Enjoy snuggling that sweet little bundle!

Kacky,
YOu do have a wonderful attitude.
You know, I didn't breastfeed my first three babies. But I remember one thing I was told on retreat once...crying over the past means you are not living in the present.
Embrace the present (even the situation) as you embrace your new baby.
You're right. She's thriving and that's what's important. One day this baby girl may have to put her own baby on a bottle for any number of reasons and, because of this experience, you will be there to guide and encourage her.
Bless you both!
