Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been researching TT and found myself over at the WTM board (which I should stay away from because I'll never measure up). Anyway, many of the moms were very negative about TT; I think that's been discussed here before. However, I've now read the TT Pre-Algebra/Algebra doesn't explain the 'why' but gives the student a rule to memorize.

My 11dd finished Saxon 7/6 this year without any trouble. Math is her favorite subject. She does not like Saxon at all, especially the way it jumps around. So I had decided to get her TT Pre-Algebra until I read this. She very intent on needing to know the 'why' behind everything, and frankly, I need a book that tells me the why so I can explain it to her.

Anyone here have experience with the Pre-Algebra book. Does it not explain but just have the student memorize?

Thanks,
Janet

Well, I have a ds who needed to know the why also and he could never understand it doing Saxon. So I bought the TT series and one day (early into the lessons) I heard him exclaim "that's why, I never understand why you had to do that until now!" So I guess it does explain. Now I have given my 2 ds (18,15) the books and CDs to do on their own, so I can't really answer about the memorziation part because they are able to do it with out my help. But by their response to the program I believe it does explain it.

I think each child learns differently and you just have to find the program that fits your child. My oldest 3 did Saxon and had no problems but the next 3 just couldn't do it with Saxon and so that is why I went with TT and those 3 have done very well with them.

Don't know if I really answered your question!

God bless,

I can't really imagine that to be true. I have only used the first 40 lessons of TT5 and find it explains things very well and in depth. I can't imagine that it would change style and completely leave out relevant information at that level.

I LOVE teaching textbooks! Our children, too, did very well with Saxon but...I wanted them to know the why of it! I have had our 2 older sons do TT prealgebra, Algebra, Algebra II and the oldest is starting TT geometry.

I will begin our 7th grader this year with TT prealgebra. (He has just finished saxon 76.)

Just my 2 cents. I know a lot of mothers like Saxon and every family is different. I do think the Sabouri's are VERY thorough in their explanations and it has made MY life easier:)

Thank you for restoring my confidence. I'm off to a used curriculum fair with a prayer that I'll find TT Pre-Algebra. I got concerned when I read this one mom saying it didn't explain concepts so I'm glad to hear from others that it does do this.

Thanks,
Janet

I sure am glad to hear all these positive reviews, considering I just ordered TT for the first time for my 7th and 5th graders.

(I was a little bummed though to find that the automated grading that exists in the lower grades does not apply to the upper grades. I soooooo much wanted that feature to ease things up around here. )
