My oldest son is begging to do more astronomy study. I want to offer him a little more in depth study that my daughters wouldn't be ready for yet. Has any one used a curriculum or already put together unit study for a child in the 5-8 grade level? Technically he is in 5th grade, but his reading and understanding of science is a little higher than that. I really need something that is all put together for me. I found this site and was wondering if anyone could recommend one of these or something else. Thanks!

We really loved the Apologia Astronomy book! It was excellent, and we learned a lot!

Marilyn...We are doing Astronomy this year and I am using 365 Starry Nightsas our spine. We are going to do stars and constellations first, then the sun, then the moon and lunar phases, then the solar system and other astronomical phenomenon, and lastly astronomers and space exploration. The star books are in the sidebar at my blog, here is my whole reading list for littles up to my 5th grader...hope that helps (disregard the library notations!)

Could you elaborate a little about how you use the 365 Starry Nights book? How is it arranged or formatted?

Colleen, I also tried and got access denied. Would you have the list somewhere I could access it? or could you PM it or email or something?

I like 365 Starry Nights, and Astronomy: A Self Teaching Guide.
Matilda...Buzz over to Amazon and you can look inside 365...it is arranged nightly by month, and includes line drawings of the mythological characters for whom the stars are named, a bit of lore, and easy-to-follow instructions on how to find what you want to see, including measuring arc degrees with your bare hand--very handy.

Isn't there an Astronomy unit in the latest Mater et Magistra? I temporarily misplaced my copy that I can't check.

Thanks for all the help! I picked up the Apologia Astronomy book to start with and went ahead and ordered the 365 Starry Nights book. I really like it, but number 1 son and I thought we would wait until January 1 and start using it then so that we could start at the very beginning of the book. Thanks again!

Sorry--I missed the tail end of this conversation...we've started school here and the kids are loving astronomy. We're headed to the planetarium this afternoon. It's too hot and mosquito-y to do a lot of star gazing right now, but we may try to get out early tomorrow morning to spot the Summer Triagle we have been reading about.
The kids love the 365 days book. We have been reading the info and then making a Main Lesson Book. For August, we drew and labeled the SUmmer Triangle and the constellations Lyra, Cygnus, and Aquila and narrated the myths (We are studying mythology this year as well).
We are making a Perseid meteor shower page with an explanation of meteor showers and the way they are named, a diagram of the constellation Perseus and a narration of that myth...which leads to the myths of Cassopeia, Cepheus, and Andromeda, so we'll probably add those soon after.
Quinn has been drawing his pages by hand, but I bought the younger crew black-paged books and gold star stickers. I put dots on the page in the shape of the constellation and they place the stickers, then draw in the picture around it in white crayon and label it. They are loving it.
If anyone would still like to see the whole list and hasn't been able to, pm me and I'll send it to you. Sorry I'm so late on the uptake.
