Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am really interested in knowing what math I can use other than Saxon with the saxon manipulatives. I really like the way they look but I dont want to use Saxon math for my 1st and 3rd grader it just seems so dry to me. They enjoy hands on most subjects I was also interested in Shiller math I thinkthat the girls will enjoy this kind of math much more and the manupalitives are included. Any suggestions or thoughts?

We like Shiller here. Thought Saxon was dry also. But, there is something to be said about some drill in Saxon. We had to stop using Shiller to work on math facts as we hit a wall in book 3. We just didn't know those facts well enough. I have heard most people supplement Shiller, most often with Singapore. We have been working with Singapore for a year now and are ready to pick up Shiller again.   We will still use Singapore 3 days a week and Shiller, 2.
There are other manipulative math programs to look into. Right Start, Moving with Math, Math-U-See, are a few that I come up with off the top of my head. You could also look into them, if you haven't already.
Don't get me wrong though. We do like Shiller and miss it. The songs are a blast and a lot of the lessons are like playing games. I will be finishing book 3 with ds who is 10 and going through book 1 with dd who is 5.

Thanks you gave me alot to think about. I really like Shiller and I will most likely get it because I really like the approach it has.
Would you recommend the drills for the 3rd grader. Last year her math had a lot of assessments and small drills and I feel as though she retained nothing, when we would revisit adding or subtracting for instance she said she forgot and we would have to redo the lesson all over again and that really made feel I didn't understand until now what other say when they say that a subject can be DRY.
I am looking to from them in math and not bog them down with math facts on top of math facts. Well not when they are not ready.

Why did you choose Singapore? Is it compatible with Shiller or did you make it to be so. Thank you so much for helping me.

Claudia,
My ds was 4th grade when I started the drill type work. He wouldn't have handled it as well any younger. I was amazed the ps's were timing the kids in second grade! He would have imploded! Now, he loves the challenge of being timed.
I chose Singapore for a bunch of reasons:
-teaches kids to think--exactly what Shiller does. Even in the text they "see" how to do things with pictures and cute comics-then practice.
-it was recommended by others who used Shiller and had the same issue about not knowing math facts, cold.
-I really like how it teaches. My ds "seems" behind his ps peers but I think he will be ahead in the future.
-It is a well thought out program. I have only heard positives about it and the kids in Singapore do well in math.
I did nothing(will do nothing) special to make the programs work together. I put ds in Singapore 2A last spring and we worked on "catching up" as we hit a wall with multiplication and division at the end of book 3. We put Shiller aside while we did this. We got through that and 2B pretty quickly as we only hit the chapters we needed too-hard. We are starting 3A soon and will pick up Shiller again soon. My plan is 3 days a week in Singapore and 2 days a week of Shiller. I think he will be OK now.
I hope that helps.
