Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

As the only Catholic homeschoolers in our town my children have a very small group of friends. Over the last 6 months my 14yodd has become friends with a lovely girl from our church (she attends the local high school) and last night we had her stay over for the first time.
She is a really sweet girl, and is a joy to be around.

This morning (Wednesday morning here in Australia) before they woke I made a couple of batches of muffins for breakfast and had planned to make some fruit smoothies as well. When they awoke and came out to say good morning I offered them breakfast and asked what sort of smoothie our visitor preferred.
She said that she was only allowed to eat bread and water on Wednesday and Fridays - her mother had this rule for the entire family (7 children aged 18 months up to 16 years).
Apparently her mother had read years ago of a small town who were falling away from the faith and Our Lady appeared and asked them to fast on Wed and Fri. Our visitor's mother decided then that as a family they must all fast every Wed and Fri - forever.
My concern is that I am sure the Church teaches that children are not to fast - am I right?? The father of the family left them last year after the birth of the last child so I am not sure if that has anything to do with her decision to fast.
Our visitor is a beautiful with a kindly nature, but she is 'irritable' at many things they must adhere to in their family - the fasting is just one example. I am concerned that this will drive her away from the Church when she is older as she complains to my own daughter about the restrictions imposed on her and her siblings.

I guess this disturbs me because my husband was raised by a strict Catholic grandmother who focused on rules but with no love for the Church taught. It made him run away from the Church as soon as he was old enough to leave home. Even now he still struggles with the Church and keeps people and God at a distance.
