Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am currently reading "When Children Love to Learn" by Elaine Cooper. It is a really interesting book that I found at our library.

On page 166 she discusses the purpose of copybooks and what the contents of one might contain. She dicusses having one for each time period of history studied such as one for Egypt, Greece, Rome etc. She also describes decorating them with wallpaper or fabric. I read that the student should do a roughdraft first, and then the student fully edits the work, then they are placed in the book for binding. "A title page and table of contents are also included."

She goes on to state, "The teacher and the students identify areas to be researched for the copybook entries. For Egypt, the list of entries might include such things as religion, daily life, arts and crafts, mummy making, the pharoahs.......(etc.)" "These become the focus for study, reflection, and research. As information is found, it is recorded in rough draft form, edited, and then put into final draft for placement in the copybook. " (page 166) They can also include narrations, timelines, and special projects etc.

O.K.!!!! I thought copybooks were COPY books. You know, you just copy fancy sayings from books, and there are pre-made copybooks from places like Memoria Press and things like that. (Sort of handwriting with a purpose.) What are these copybooks that are being talked about here??? Is this something different? I thought it sounded very interesting and as usual, I have a lot of interesting ideas that I can't seem to bring into the world!! I am challenged when I try to produce this. It sounded a little like lapbooking, but not really. I guess I have been clueless for awhile!! This sounds kind of neat.

Could someone fill me in on copybooks????

Kim,

I don't have the book in front of me but I think wht she is talking about is what older kids would do to expand on the copywork and timeline, creating a history text book for themselves. I remember really liking this idea and thinking it would be good when my kids are more middle-school age (11-14 or so) and I'd have each of them choose their own way of making a "text" -- so that they're copybook would be what THEY thought was critical for the period covered (maybe at the end of each week, section or whatever).

Also, when Children love to Learn is primarily focused at bringing CM learning into classroom settings with many things in Cooper's book applying to homeschool.

Am I muddying the waters more for you or does that help?

Mary,

No, I sort of gathered that it might be a book more catered to a regular school setting as opposed to homeschooling. The copybooks sounded really neat though!!! I might try to get my inagination into gear on this one.

I agree! I think I might try it this year with mine doing American History and let them do a bit of "masterly inactivity" by seeing what they come up with to record ....

Thanks for reminding me of this!
