Pardon my dumb question... Can you explain how you do spelling if you don't do it everyday. I'm of the old school mindset where you practice the spelling words everyday (writing and/or orally) and then you do a test at the end of the week. I can't seem to wrap my brain around any other way to do it but I need a different way because my way is not working. My dc just don't see a point in studying a list of words at random especially if they already know how to spell them. I'm thinking that maybe just keeping a list of words they don't spell correctly would be a start but then I worry that wouldn't really stretch them in learning new words that they wouldn't normally be using. I've also read books where spelling isn't taught and they just learn it from what they read and write. Has anyone had success with that?
I was going to check out the AVKO link but it didn't work for me. Thanks for any insight you can give on the logistics and/or spelling programs.

Monique - have you checked out Spelling Power - you do not learn words you already know.Spelling Power
Or maybe use the Ruth Beechick approach of learning spelling through dictation and copywork. I am going to review the Spelling Wisdomon Simply Charlotte Mason.
What I find with my kids is that they can spell perfectly with spelling tests even with Spelling Power, but not necessarily when writing - that is why I am considering something like Spelling Wisdom.

It might be helpful for you to follow an approach that The Writing Road to Reading/ Spell to Write and Read uses where they base their spelling lists on the 1000 most frequently used in the English language. If your child learns these, they'll learn close to 80% of all the English words. The list helps you concentrate your efforts so that you get the most return for the time spent.

After working hard on spelling for the last three years and making only a slight improvement we have just started the AVKO spelling. I'm very impressed so far, having said that, I have come to the conclusion that different approaches suit different children, so it may be for some of your dc but may not be for all, kwim? Anyhow I'm trying it with all of mine, so far so good.
Here's how it works, it is based on the word family approach and explaining rules as they come up. The author is not into testing per se, he teaches basic sounds and builds on. So we are working on word families in a variety of words and then adding suffixes and prefixes. I decided to go this way as dh and I remember learning this way and we are both good spellers.
We have completed 7 days so far, the first day the children had to spell 'beginning' that was the 'test' all of the dc spelt it incorrectly. Then we started, in, pin, sin, spin. Day 2 saw the addition of plural endings on these words and 4 new words kin, skin, win, twin. Day 3 were the 'ed' suffixes and another 4 new words including begin. Day 4 were other endings etc. By Day 5 the children came across beginning and ALL of them spelt it correctly!!!
BTW We tried the WRTR but my children refused to do the markings. And we tried the CM/Ruth Beechick spelling approach for the last three years with slow progress. This is not to say my dc don't like spelling, they do, but they just weren't 'getting it'.

i tried akvo spelling for 2 years. i was not impressed. i didn't care for the lack of info - words were given, but no rules. the list of words was long - 24. my boys found it boring. i have just switched to all about spelling. the materials have just arrived and i'm busy setting it up, but i can't wait. it uses magnetic tiles for spelling rather than pencil. the words are pretty easy to spell because the point is to teach the spelling rules, not to get a perfect spelling score.

I agree that I think different approaches work for different children. To some, spelling comes very easy (like my daughter), and to some, not so easy.
For my daughter, we're using Spelling Wisdom at simplycharlottemason.com. It works very well for her.
We often just have fun having *family spelling bees* and spelling for fun.

It is really interesting that you share this about the lack of rules, when I bought the program it was promoted as having the rules but now after having a further, thorough search I can't find the rules. Some of my older dc are finding the length of time spent on each family (eight lists) long, I've wondered whether I should put them onto a harder book but I'm not too sure how to judge with book. But I am worried about them losing interest.
