Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We had an appt with our daughter's doctor yesterday to go over several test results. We learned that she is gluten intolerant and has casein sensitivity. I have just sadly realized that this means the Holy Eucharist for her . This not only means the Precious Body of Christ, but also His Precious Blood. In a book that our doctor recommended, alcohol (spirits) was listed as a food that contains gluten and that it should be avoided. Is there anything that we can do, so that she can receive the Eucharist? What have others done that have children with allergies?
Thank you so much.
Love,
Margaret

I'm on my way out hte door - so no time to discuss more, but here are two old threads of discussion. There is a low gluten host option that some can tolerate which is discussed.

Celiacs receiving...

Celiac Disease - new diagnosis

Margaret, I have celiac disease/am gluten intolerant. Wine does NOT have gluten in it. Alcohols brewed from grains with gluten (wheat, barley, rye) such as beer and some types of hard liquor (whiskey?) are off limits.
But wine is made from grapes, so no gluten.

My parish priest will be ordering the low-gluten hosts for us. There are about six celiacs in our parish (only 250 households!). He'll consecrate them during the week and we'll have to be at a particular Mass to recieve the low-gluten hosts. Otherwise we "just" receive Jesus' Precious Blood--it's more than sufficient, of course!

And hey, it's the month of the Precious Blood of Jesus! I've been wanting to know more about this devotion since being diagnosed with gluten-intolerance.

There's lots of good blogs out there for celiac/gluten-intolerance. Let me know if you need any help.

The priest will reserve a chailce with no host added and for her to use only/first that way there is no contamination.

I have heard good things about the no-gluten hosts our parish now uses- they are made using wheat starch (meets vatican guidelines) and has the gluten protien removed.

DH has never had a bad reaction from recieving and he is a celiac- and i will have our celiac children recive the no gluten wafers and reserved chalice . dh feels strongly that "I am reciveing Our Lord -he will not harm me" Dh is stubborn though- he still recieves the Precious blood too after 10 yrs of being alcohol free He says i worry to much.

But mostly dont worry and talk to your priest-he is more likely to be very aware of the issue -many doc's (including ours) dont have all the updated info on the dietary needs let alone the religious ones

God Bless your family during this transition-

oh and on another note dont forget to have a blood panel run on you and dad and sibs too- its very common to have first degree relatives with the same problem
in our family it is mil, dh, one ds and one dd

oh and some links-

I just wanted to let readers know that the link to the Benedictine Sisters of the Perpetual Adoration from the older (linked) thread has changed.

http://www.benedictinesisters.org/bread/low_gluten.php

Hope that helps anyone who is trying to find the Sisters to find out more about their work.

I dont receive the Host but just his Precious Blood. You could even ask to see the ingredient listing on the wine.
