Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dd11 would like to become more fluent of a reader- I think she has grown leaps and bounds in the past year but she has indicated that she desires to be more fluent.

The phonics thing, anything past the phonograms in 100 easy lessons, didn't stick much at all with her. I think she has been more of a sight reader (quite a right brained creative type that is very bright but struggles with spelling and has struggled with reading in the past).

Has anybody used anything to help someone this age that is not dumbed down? I think some phonics review for her would be great.

Would you have a younger child you might ask her to help with? sometimes teaching can be a better review than being the student

We started using Spell to Read and Write 6 months ago with our struggling 10 yr old.

It is a lot of work initially for mum, but it is certainly paying off in spelling and reading. It just makes so much sense! We are really learning how to break words down; rules and 70 phonograms. I am a poor speller and I am loving it too!

I'm only using it with one child as our other son is a more natural speller.

sondaysystem.com

Th Sonday System is what I have started using this year and it is wonderful. Expensive, but there is no prep time for mom. Everything is layed out for you with a video from the author, Mrs. Sonday, for every lesson.

My son is 12 and struggling. I have seen a big improvement.
My girls, 6 and 8, learned to read through 100 EZ lessons and were missing pieces of information because of the book. This program has definately been filling in the voids.

Thank you all. I own spell to read and write but I find it so does not suit my teaching style. But, if it helped my dd it would be well worth it. I will look at it again...

Thank you Simona, I will look at that curric.

Jodie, her 5 year old brother is beginning to read so I am going to start her helping with that, as well as reading aloud picture books to him (which has always seemed to help her fluency.)

Thanks again.

I'm late on this but I highly recommend Great Leaps for reading fluency.

Kristie,

You might want to look at All About Spelling. It's very thorough. Check out

www.all-about-spelling.com

Check the FAQ to see what level to start with if you are interested.

In Christ,
