I'm just curious the types of treasures you all find in your laundry and what you do with them. I usually find pony tail holders, rocks, coins and other little things. Occasionally I find a game boy game (they always still work) or something like that, of value. I hold it all hostage in a little plastic wipe-type bin on the laundry room counter.
Do you clean out pockets before you load laundry? What do you do with the stuff that makes it through the wash?

I clean pockets and zip zippers and button closures when I can. When I haven't cleaned the pockets, I've regretted it. I'm the biggest offender...tissues left in the pocket get all over the wash!
As far was treasures...all money I get to keep. Consider it payment for the laundress. But a large windfall rarely happens.

Oh, another thought. I know I only have 3 people generating laundry, but I learned the method of preparing the clothes for laundry from my mother, who had 7 children. She did all the laundry and zipped and checked pockets, turned things inside out, etc. It takes a little more time, but it does save money in the long run. I know...replacement clothes cost money!

I've found money -- coins and bills -- and gift certificates; once my 16 yos left his wallet and amazingly nothing was severely damaged (including the Homecoming Dance tickets he had just paid $40 for!), also earrings, necklaces, watches, you name it. The worst offenders are my dear gils who are not very tidy.....my boys are so persnickety, they rarely leave anything (too bad, too as they're the ones with the big money ). Whatever gets left gets kept by the finder -- held hostage for a certain fee and then returned.
Hey I have to make a living too !

Library cards!
Lego!
Coins of many lands!
Rocks!
And the worst thing of all--Feathers! Ugh, they are hard to reach at the bottom of the washer!
I'm with Jenn--I keep all money.

Isn't it amazing what CAN go through a washer/dryer and still keep working (and often, not even leak) -- I've found many things in the past that I just thank goodenss didn't get all over eveyrthing!!!!!! Is there a guardian angel for laundresses

How about bandaids. They definitely do not do well if you do not catch them before the dryer. I now have a permanent bandaid stuck to my bathrobe (the warm, new one, of course!) Also 11 yo ds watch went through the washer and dryer twice - thankfully it did survive!

We have the usual kid stuff in pockets, mostly legos. Our problem is that my dh keeps ending up with my nursing pads hiding in his shirt sleeves or pant legs. He showers and dresses at the gym in the mornings so he is with his buddies when he finds them.

Mary, I hear you about the leaking. Sometimes my daughter can accidentally leave a chapstick in her pocket and it will be perfectly intack even after the dryer. Other times, with the lid still on, it will have been completely drained. Yuk.
And Janet, I have a bandaid permanently stuck to the inside of my dryer!!
It never ceases to amaze me, too, how things that go in right-side-out come out of the dryer inside-out! Or socks that end up way down in the footie of Patrick's jammies. And heaven forbid there's a pair of tights or stockings in with something that has velcro.

Guitar picks, rocks, hair clips, binkys, rosary beads (Dave and I usually have some in our pockets).

I have something weird melted on the inside of my dryer, too, but I don't think its a bandaid.

I laughed so hard I almost cried; I'd say you're lucky no company came over and got chilled.

rule in our house is if I find any money in pockets when doing the laundry I get to keep it. Don't often find any though.

I've started purposely leaving a little money in my pockets as an incentive to my 7yo dd who I am trying to train to put the laundry from the washer to the drier.

I had to revive this topic, as I just spent three hours taking my washing machine apart to clean out the pump.
Aside: All you ladies who are married to repairmen--is there a trick to getting hose clamps on and off? I think I could have saved two hours of I only knew the trick!!
Anyway, the washer (front-loader) would not drain. Once before this happened, and I called a repairman, and he charged me $50 to get a nickel out of the pump. I figured with inflation, it would cost me more, but since the pump is modular, I could at least determine the problem, and possibly order a new pump, if it turned out to be something more serious than a nickel. It was more than a nickel ...but still, a simple blockage.
Here's what I found:
8 quarters
14 dimes
2 nickels
5 pennies
10 cents (Hong Kong, 1997)
1 Miraculous medal
1 St. Christopher medal
1 2-inch screw
GI Joe dog tags
4 bits of chain
1 former earring, in several pieces
3 Pieces of paper clip
1 ring (gum-machine prize)
3 carpet staples
1 fishing spinner
The best treasure? The savings from DIY!

WOW! All that! Is pocket-emptying going to be on the priority list?
What an adventure!
