If you saw the update here you know that my family is about to undertake a huge, new adventure.

We're moving from the east coast to Wyoming. We hope to be out of our home in 2-4 weeks.

I am open to any advice those of you who have done this can offer. Please!

We're researching lots of options, and so far it looks like it's almost the same price to have a mover take our things as it is to rent a Uhaul and do it ourselves. I keep asking the Lord why we're moving 2,000 miles the summer that gasoline is $4+ dollars a gallon?!?

There is a possibility we'll fly out. And we have a cat to bring with us. Can anyone give me any pointers here?

I'm wide open to suggestions, ladies! Thanks!

I can't give you any pointers on the moving issues, but want to welcome you to the Rocky Mountain region ! East coast to Wyoming - that will be a change. Weeeeeelllllll. We are in the middle of our move from NC to Alaska right now. Instead of renting a U-Haul, we decided to go the route of purchasing a 7X14 utility trailer so we could re-sell it once we get up there, regaining most of our investment.
Currently we are in South Dakota (lovely state!)with many more miles and many more gallons of gas to go. I will let you know when we get there if this was the right "move" or not.LOL!

I have not packed up and moved myself in years. We always have a mover come in, pack the boxes, and then deliver them to the other side. I am not certain that I could do it myself with the children and our "junk."

The biggest problem that I had with this last move was that we moved into a furnished rental and then we moved into our own home. And since we were moving overseas, we knew that we would not have a big house or yard. So I had to shed. We had a garage sale and an auction. I also had to put some stuff in storage in the states (cannot get rid of the hoosier cabinet I inherited from my grandmother). I had to send the rest to storage here while we lived on a small shipment that came across eariler.

As I unpack the boxes, I could kick myself for some of the things that I left behind ... like my ironing board! I just wished I had planned more carefully about some of the more practical items!

Theresa, my dh has mentioned a trailer. Honestly, I 'm not sure what it is and how it works. How are you finding the driving?


Carole, I know what you mean about the packing. It is sooo overwhelming - I'm hoping to get some friends in to help. But honestly, it all feels like something only I can do, because so much has to be purged as it is packed.

We are moving in steps too: First to the house of a friend there, then into our home by Aug. 1, which is furnished. The owner calls the style "Early American Attic"    We are free to dispose of the furniture as we wish, and we will be replacing it over time. I'm hoping in 'short' time.

We're planning an yard sale this weekend. We will take very little with us, and be starting over when we arrive. And I'm sure we'll arrive without something practical that we'll really need. Sheesh.

We shopped around found a mover, checked them out at the BBB, they gave us a bargain price, as they wanted to outbid our lowest offer.   

I did the packing, they loaded the truck... We moved, they generously arranged to deliver our things only 8 days later, usually it takes 14 days. They unloaded, it was awesome, it saved dh the work, I was 8 mo pg, so there was less and less I could do as far as lifting. This cost us actually less than our friends who came from the very same city by U-Haul.

We got to drive out by ourselves, had a mini-vacation, it was a wonderful time and no worries about the stuff and dh wasn't exhausted from loading the truck.

oh, and someone told us not to really liquidate our things, as it would be cheaper to move them.... furniture is more economical to move than books b/c of the weight.

others told us to liquidate and buy new things when we got there....

my advice is not to liquidate, pare down some of course, but don't get rid of things you actually use. there are a million little hidden costs to moving. and you don't want to get there and have to buy a lot more things. KWIM?

Also check ABF u-pack service. We've been checking prices for us to move ourselves and their rate is quite reasonable.

It's a 28' trailer that they drive and you pack. There are also some movers/packers that specialize in loading ABF trailers.

Although, when looking at these prices, I have thought of getting rid of most everything and gradually replacing. I'm not sure our things are even worth what it would cost to move.

How exciting! If it is almost the same price, I would vote for having movers take your things rather than U-Hauling it yourselves. And I would drive, not fly, because I love road trips. Praying for a smooth move and safe travels!

Tami, I am so in agreement with Rebecca! If you know that you will use something--including furniture and books--take it with you. You can always sell it in your new place if you find you don't need it anymore or it won't fit.

I am struggling to try and make all of my belongings fit in a house that is probably half the size as my home in the states. But I am so thankful that I brought all of my sacramentals (although much of it is still waiting to be hung) and I brought our outdoor statues of Mary and Joseph. I even brought my bird bath! I was so thankful when the children unpacked it and set it up in our very tiny backyard.

I had to sell most of our appliances because the power is different here, so I am gradually replacing as I go along. But I could kick myself everytime I think of some of the practical things that I left behind. PM me if you want to hear more whining.

We are moving next week from the East Coast to Minnesota and we also will not have housing immediately when we arrive. We're going with PODS (Portable On Demand Storage. There are a few competing companies that work on similar models. We didn't price movers but I know that the PODS option is more expensive than UHAUL but they deliver the ground-level unit to our apartment, we load it, they haul it away and store it. We'll drive out to Minnesota and stay with family (for free, thankfully) while we look for a new rental and when we find our new place the PODS people will bring us our unit.

The convenience outweighs the extra cost and it certainly costs less than paying rent in July or having to fly out ahead of time to line up a new house. You might look into that as an option if you will be in between housing for a time.

We only did a tiny move from one state to another - but the packing part would have been the same regardless of where we moved - it is the driving that makes the big difference, I guess. We U-hauled it, because we are/were pretty broke, and the movers were WAY out of our price range (although it sure would have been nice to have movers!!)

Now - I actually moved into a house almost double the size of our previous house (we went from 1019 sf to ~1800sf) My children run back and forth through the house, and it is lovely to actually have two different rooms for a LV and DR/Kitchen - before it was just a "great room" and a galley kitchen.

BUT - I don't want to unpack! Does this happen to other people? I have inside the things I need & use daily, the rest is in boxes in the garage, and I am more than happy to let it stay there. It is easier and quicker to clean, and I love the uncluttered-ness of it. Dh keeps saying, "we should unpack" and I kind of mutter an unintelligible response and quickly try to distract him ....

We had to leave our cats with Grandma.

Well, having just completed (with internet service finally! ) a move in the reverse -- Denver to Virginia -- I'd definitely go with a mover altho pack as much as you can and ask for a non-binding quote.

Dh was a bit chagrined at the number of books we still moved (altho, ask Mary M, I got rid of a ton before we moved, honest! ) as was the actual mover named Robert! But it was all worth while in the long run.

Blessings for a smooth trip and wish I could welcome you personally to the Rockies -- but know that MaryM is a much better contact than you'll ever know.

We're moving from TN to NC at the end of July, and like Susan, we're going with the PODS for the sake of convenience. We have a house on the market, and we used a POD to store furniture we know we want for the new house, but wanted to get out of our current house to declutter it. (and now I don't want it back! Well, I will when I get there, but boy, does the house here look nice and open!). So we'll finish loading up and have the POD moved when we're ready to move. That just seemed the most streamlined way to deal with the stages of this move, rather than storing furniture someplace, then having to deal with it again to get it moved.

I do love movers, though. And I love road-tripping!
