Hi Families,
A friend of mine told me about the idea of jam writing. You chose a topic and then tell your story - unworried about punctuation and spelling.
We've been doing one jam writing session a week now for 5 weeks and I've really enjoyed the ideas that have arisen and the stories that have been written.
What I am going to do at the end of the year, is compile all of the stories into a book for each of the children and we'll have a homemade record of their creativity and progress. Oh, I also have them illustrate their story.
Here's a sample of one of Isabella's stories...she did this one on Monday.
The Flower that Had a Hard Time Growing
Jam Writing by Isabella Peceli
October 10, 2005
In the capital of Japan, Tokyo, there was a flower that never grew. It was a camouflage flower.
Everyday his owner came out to water it but nothing happened.
Finally, one day when she came out to water it, it began to grow and grow and grow. Finally, it became almost as big as a beanstalk. The owner, Minyang, started to climb the stem. She climbed and climbed and climbed till she was at the top of her house. Minyang got onto her house then she swung on one of the vines of the camouflage flower. As she touched the vine, she became camouflaged. Minyang swung herself real darn hard and flew across the East China Sea into China, the country itself. Then after saying, “Hi!” to a couple of people, she returned to Japan by swinging on the vine back to Tokyo.
The End
Hope you all enjoy a glorious day.
God Bless,

Bravo, Isabella! What a well done and interesting story. My little girls are going to enjoy it.
Maria, we do something similar to this learned from The Writer's Jungle by Julie Bogart (and Julie's website and blog). It is called free writing, and the girls do it in fifteen minute intervals, not worrying about spelling or punctuation, but just getting the words on paper. We reserve Friday as our freewriting day, often getting subject ideas from Julie's blog. Here is sample: Friday Freewrite.

Maria, I loved Isabella's story! Great job. I'll pass it on to my girls, too.
Alice, about your Bravewriter approach -- although we don't use Bravewriter, we do something similar. I really stress with my girls that a "rough draft" is called that for a reason. I think so many kids get stressed over writing because they expect it to be perfect the first time. It's so freeing for kids to know that they don't have to fret over every spelling and bit of structure and punctuation, that all of that can be cleaned up later.
We're doing weekly journals this year -- just choosing an event from our week to write about. Lizzy still isn't really comfortable with it, but we're making progress, and Emily is diving into it. I can really see the things I've been doing with her over the years starting to gel in a new way.

Ohhhhh...I just checked out the Bravewriter Jungle site for the Friday Freewrite! Very cool! (I like that icon!).
Julie's topics help with critical thinking, moral development and creativity....wow! I think we'll start with "What would happen if children ruled the world?"
I can just think of some answers - but my kids just might surprise me!
Thanks for the encouragement.
Love and God Bless,

Thanks for the immediate link Alice, I often get bogged down in great sites like Julie's 'cause there's SO much GOOD stuff. I love the "What if a package came to you" starter and I am going to jumpstart our writing for today with this one, and then move ours to Friday also!
Maria, loved your daughter's story too
Happy writing!

Oh, Meredith, that was my favorite one. My 11 and 10 year olds did an especially nice job on that topic starter.
