Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask about this particular book but I will have a go anyway.

Has anyone used "Our Mother Tongue: A Guide to English Grammar" by Nancy Wilson?

If so what were your childrens ages and how did you find it?

Thanks
C

I used this book last year as a complement to the Essentials of the English Grammar program from Classical Conversations (classicalconversations.com). I used it as a supplement for me and when needed I would read some parts to my 11 yo and do some of the exercises orally.

I liked the book but I think it is more of a reference book. It does have some exercises after each chapter but I don't think it lends itself well to be a stand alone program. A high-schooler could use it with no problem but I don't think it would be an attractive book to use for anybody younger on their own.

I know that Julie from Bravewriter recommends to do grammar one time on each school cycle (once in elem., once in middle sch. and once in hs). I think this book would be good for a quick survey of grammar in middle school or high school.

HTH,

Natalia

Thanks for your comments. I bought this book after a very quick peruse and haven't used it or really had a good look at it since.
I only just realized that it didn't have any answer keys in the back and even if the work is easy for me I like to save time with being able to mark from answer keys.
I like the fact that it explains the Latin roots of words and gives the reader Titbits of extra info about grammar and words etc.

I think I will take your recommendation and wait a bit and use it with my older dc's.
When you mentioned this "I know that Julie from Bravewriter recommends doing grammar one time on each school cycle (once in elem., once in middle sch. and once in hs).” How long does she recommend each time during the cycle to be?
We do English and grammar but it is something that we do throughout the week. I would like to streamline this a bit more and possible do blocks of it instead.

Thanks
Chemai
