Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was looking at the table of contents for Faith and Life 5 for next year as I was considering purchasing it soon. We have been using it since FHC prep and have liked it.
However, I am finding much repetition of material and am thinking it will annoy ds. He "gets" the liturgical year and what happens at different holidays/holy days and during mass.
So, I am thinking of starting a nice, slow progression to confirmation prep. I have been following the recent thread here and think it might be good. My question is do you all think the resources mentioned would be appropriate for a 5th grader? There are some books mentioned that need chapters to be skipped even for an older kid so I am trying to plot my course...I can go REALLY slow since I have many years Which books of those mentioned are easier and will be more appropriate for a younger child? Am I way off base in thinking this is a good idea?
Any input would be appreciated.

Interesting.. here Confirmation is 6th and 7th grade.. every other year. So they do start confirmation prep at CCD in 5th grade (every other year). I'm trying to figure out some of it for myself now.. seems Confirmation gets sorta slipped past in RCIA.

Jodie,
I think here confirmation is around 14 years of age.
I am all for early prep. It worked out nice when we moved here from VA(they start 2 years before in VA-and I even started before that). We were able to do it when and where we wanted since ds was ready to do it early.
What resources do they use where you are since they seem to do it earlier?

They don't seem to be using something in particular. Not a curriculum type product anyway. Some handouts, I think they talked a good bit about the saints.

I think that they leave out a good bit of some of the curriculums for older kids.. certainly there's been nothing inappropriate for their ages.

And I know they plan to do more when things start up this fall.

I think they may cover some of the things after Confirmation rather than before.. In the Jr High and High school classes. I think the classes are very well run here. We're in such a small area that my son's 1st Communion class of 9 was HUGE and my daughter's of 3 wasn't unusual. And I know the CCD instructors.. one is our family dentist another one of the doctors at the clinic we use, several are parents of kids that are good friends of my children and they'll go and spend the day with them. Aren't small towns fun.

But see that's where I'm rather confused myself.. I'm not entirely sure what exactly they are covering.. or why or what should be included and isn't or what have you.

I've recently gotten some books for myself.. I've had little time to really read them right now.. but one I read a smidge of.. seems to be a different than traditional way of teaching Confirmation.. but something that stood out to me was it mentioned that building up the spiritual life through Bible reading, sacraments and prayer of the individual over service projects.. and quote St. Vincent de Paul "The poor did not lead me to God, God lead me to the poor".

So I was thinking what I should focus on was the inner parts since the class seems to focus more on the outer parts.

Anne - You might consider just using Image of God 5 for next year. I like them very much up to grade 7 (where they begin offering information I'd rather offer on my own at home - too much information - so pre-read that one) as a supplement to F&L.

You might consider just starting an in depth study of the virtues and virtue building! And maybe a really great study of the saints through the Vision book series and the Windeatt series.

Some of the books intended for Confirmation prep assume a certain level of maturity on the child's part. I've had to pre-read most of the books I'm using to ensure that my dd's(11) innocence is protected.

Just my thoughts...
