Is anybody else thinking she may just end up without TV reception as a result of this instead of bothering to replace whatever it is that needs replacing? We still are antenna-dependent, no cable. We grownups practically never watch anything on TV on our own. My habits of letting the kids watch have varied greatly over the years (and even within the past year), but for a while now they've probably watched a maximum of four or so hours a week of actual television, if it goes on at all in a particular week. They do watch videos a bit more often than that. It was not always this way, but I don't think that's any argument for being better equipped to go back to their watching a lot more.
They are watching some PBS Kids right now, actually, as a less than ideal way for me to "cope," and it was some spot about it between shows reminded me of this change next February.

Nope . Because, even when we don't have cable, and have just had plain old TV, we like to watch things like the Olympics. So, I know we would get the needed upgrade (but isn't there a way to get it free?)
I hate watching TV/Movies/news/etc. on the computer.

We only watch TV a few times a year, but we do watch movies quite a bit. So, it won't affect us too much. However, dh said you can buy some type of converter box instead of buying a whole new set.

I have NO idea what you are talking about. Can you tell we don't watch TV? And yes, I do live under a rock!

I had no idea either, so I went looking.. Barring a miracle, my home will never be without cable , so we won't be replacing anything until the set we have is kaput.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who didn't get the original question! DH says that we'll probably buy an adapter or converter or some such device that will allow us to still get reception. We've never bothered to pay for cable, but have an antenna in the attic. We live in the D.C. metro area, so there are enough broadcasts that originate close to home. With just the antenna we get maybe 10 stations, which is way more than enough for me!
Peace,
Nancy

The FCC/Congress has mandated that all television stations broadcast their signals digitally beginning in February 2009. This means all television stations (local over-the-air and cable) must cease analog transmissions of any kind. Analog signal transmissions have remained virtually unchanged for the past 70 years.
If you receive your television signal via antennae/rabbit ears you must purchase a converter box prior to February 2009 in order to convert the new digital transmission into a signal that will be usable by your older television sets. The cost is approximately $50.
If you receive your television signal via cable, satellite, fiber optics, etc. you DO NOT need to do anything. Your current equipment is already making the necessary signal conversions for you and will continue to do so when the new FCC mandates take effect next February.

We just have an antennae too and the TV is almost never on, except during football season when the Seahawks are playing.
So that may be a needed conversion for my houseful of boys.

1. DH got some kind of 40.00 coupon online so we only paid about 20 for the converter. no idea where he got it.
2. we get the major networks with a rabbit ear antennae that plugs in. i'm very curious if this we will enhance or decrease our reception. analog allows for varying degrees of 'fuzzy' reception. digital is either you have it or you don't.

Mike,
Thanks for clearing that up for me. I was wondering about the whole issue for a little bit, but stopped when I figured out Jim will be home in time to figure it all out. It is good to know I have nothing to worry about.

Just a warning-when/if you get your coupon from the government for the converter it expires soon after. I think we had 6-8 weeks to find and purchase our converter box before it expired. So be ready to look for one and buy fast!
We also had some trouble finding the converter at WalMart--a store listed on the letter that came with the coupon/card. They don't appear to be stocking them well. Dh bought online from somewhere and we got our converter last week. It is in the cabinet under the TV just waiting for the big day we need it....
We also don't watch much in the way of TV and it will probably get forgotten and lost but we had to spend our coupon

We've got our coupon for the box, thanks for the warning about it expiring soon-I'll send dh out to find one this weekend. I just wish there was a chance of shows being improved with the converter box. We're a video/dvd family and watch only a few tv shows-American Idol and some PBS mostly. We don't get the tv schedule unless we look it up on-line and just forget when other shows are on.
God bless,

We will get a converter.
We have an antenna in the attic, no cable available, and I do NOT want a satellite dish with too many options to fight over stations and content.
What would really like is a chance to buy access to NFL football via our computer which we can run through the TV. It would be great to watch teams play, not in the "snow".
