I was thinking of buying this for my dd for Grade 7. Does anyone have any views - postive or negative?

We are going to be using it next year. I have been reading/skimming through it the past couple of weeks. I really like it. I was a history minor an it all came from a secular viewpoint...it was really interesting hearing it from a different perspective.
I have another friend who used it with her 8th grader too and she said they both enjoyed it.

Well dd14 initially was really reluctant as we never use textbooks, in fact back in grade 7 she refused to read it. I decided to let it go as she is such a voracious reader, mostly living books, so she was learning in other ways.
This year (grade 9) I suggested that perhaps she re-look at it as it would give her an overview of the time periods she was studying and tie it all together, she agreed. Just last week she astounded me by finishing a chapter, looking up with a smile and saying, "That was really interesting.!"
IMO it is a textbook, so it does cover events briefly but definitely from a Catholic worldview, I would suggest fleshing each chapter out with some living books, but then I have a love of well written living books.

Hmm - if I am going to use it I will probably do it over 2 years. I will go through and make a list of living books for each chapter - anyone want to join in this venture? I would also do extra activities - like our timeline notebook and use my blackline maps cd (which I love and just have not used enough!)
(I still have to make the decision to use it - am going to look at it tomorrow)

I'll certainly join in sharing booklists. My favourite thing to do. BTW I should have mentioned, dd only reads the chapter, we don't answer any questions, she sometimes discusses with me what she has read, if I remember to ask I have an irl friend who just gets her dc to choose one of the projects at the end of the chapter.
We are currently working our way through history from the Birth of Christ. I downloaded RC History's units and use them as a base, but not strictly. If I don't own some of their Core books I do without and substitute something else, unless we have nothing similar. But I am using their Activities section for research and hands on ideas. I was tired of beginning from scratch all the time, so this was a good compromise for me. I do add more ideas of my own and certainly add lots more living books. But RC History's research questions are definitely leading you to look from a Catholic viewpoint.
This is the first time we have studied history chronologically so I have loads of lists for other time periods already covered. Where do you want to share the lists?

Well I'll tell you what I have figured so far for my dd. We aren't doing the whole book either. I'm starting with Chapter 8. Oh and what I have added as outside reading I think I found most of the titles from searching for Medieval and Middle Ages threads here on the boards. And I don't have an extra title for every chapter. Also, I have some titles here that we aren't going to use, just because I know we won't have time, but they are still a good fit, I think. I'll mark the ones we are definitely going to use with an *
Chapt 9 - Martyrs of the Coliseum, O'Reilly
Chapt 11 - books about Sts. Patrick, Benedict and Bridget*
Augustine Came to Kent*
Chapt 12 - Son of Charlemagne*
Chapt 13 - Ballad of the White Horse, Chesterton
Chapt 14 - Christ the King*
Crusades, Belloc *
Proud Taste for Scarlet & Miniver*
Red Keep, French
Crusader King, Peek *
Ivanhoe *
Knight Crusader, Welch (this book sounds great but out of
print and very expensive to buy used
books about St. Francis and St. Clare *
that is a BIG chapter, lots about the different crusades, I plan on taking a couple of weeks with that one for sure!!!
Chapt 15 - Lay Siege to Heaven, Wohl *
Joan of Arc, Twain *
Chapt 16 - Characters of the Inquisition
Chapt 18 - Black Arrow *
bk about Edmund Campion *
Chapt 19 - Red Hugh
Angels in Irons, Prata *
Chapt 20 - Set All Afire, Wohl *
Chapt 21 - bk about St. Vincent de Paul *
That's as far as I have gotten so far. I can't wait to hear about other ideas! I'm still trying to wrap my mind around how to do a timeline during this...any ideas on that one? We've never done a timeline before

That's a great list Kacky. I am too tired to think and I am still trying to finalize plans before the conference tomorrow.
For timeline I use the timeline book and I have the cd of figures from Homeschool in the Woods - my kids each have one (one of my most expensive buys)
I also have a timeline in Word that I was going to use - and it is easy to google pictures for saints and other historical figures.

Marilyn,
I'm using it this year. I actually use it alongside the program at RC History - it's our second time around with RC History and this time period.
I have it, but have not yet skimmed/read through the book. As with all textbooks, I use them loosely (sometimes not even as structured as called for in the history program I'm using) as a sort of rudder to guide a study of a period of history and provide (mostly me) with an overview.
RC History lists wonderful suggestions for book lists coordinated with this time period and subdivided by age groups here. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and the blue buttons. Each button will take you to the reading list for that age group. The reading list that coordinates with Christ the King is under the Logic Booklist. Also Reading Your Way Through History has been an indispensable tool for me in choosing literature for different time periods.
HTH!

Jen - there we go again - the being on the same wavelength! I was just going to post and mention Reading your way through History as I was going through it today. Also I do have RC History - though we have not used in a couple of years.

I'll make a start at this post, I know it will take a while to work through the book.
Firstly Jennifer's links above are great, I use them to create my lists and the following catalogues, I love browsing these, Emmanuel Books (my favourite), Bethlehem Books, Our Father's House and Home School Favourites.
I have a couple of voracious readers so I need to add tons more books then many lists suggest.
I'll try to work chronologically, I find it difficult to break up some chapters, so I hope you don't mind if I combine some:
Chapters 2 and 3, is where we focused on Mesopotamia and Egypt, read here for my detailed opinion on each if you like, I also have books listed there for the younger children and non-fiction titles. (sorry to not link for the following but it would take too long)
Golden Goblet- Eloise Jarvis McGraw
Mara, Daughter of the Nile- Eloise Jarvis McGraw
Shadow Hawk- Andre Norton
The Cat of Bubastes - GA Henty
Pharoah- Jackie French **I write this with reservations as there is a couple of 'topics' addressed. Please parents read first. Otherwise book is excellent.
Riddle of the Rosetta Stone- James Cross Giblin
Pyramid- David Macaulay (non-fiction living bk style)
Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt - Elizabeth Payne
Chapter 4Israel
Hittite Warrior- Joanne Williamson
God King: A Story in the Days of King Hezekiah- Joanne Williamson
Victory on the Walls: A Story of Nehemiah- Frieda Clark Hyman
Tirzah- Lucille Travis
Adara- Beatrice Gormley
I'll post more later.

I still haven't totally decided to use this book yet - but I thought I would link my Second World War booklist for Chapter 29
World War II Unit Study

Marilyn:
Christ the King Lord of History can take huge leaps over embarrassing periods of history (the Reformation period and beyond in particular - also on Spain, though they don't ever seem to make outright incorrect statements there are some real interesting arguements put forth at times and sweeping generalities or a very cursory mention of an embarrassing Catholic) and can end up being unbalanced. Sometimes it jumps around. However, as an outline to fill in, it certainly can work well. Be sure to offer more balanced views in your other reading and fill in on some of these sketchy characters.
I do second not using the questions at the end. We also have been using it as a very loose spine for my 7th grader and supplementing with RC History and other books. I find it important to let my children know from the start that it is a bit biased.
It is really humorous to me because I personally dislike the book quite a bit, but this son likes it and it is working well this way. (He really doesn't know that he is doing RC History which he claimed he didn't like but is having fun doing when he sees it as activities and reads to go with CKLH ). My daughters were more like me and really could not stand the book. I actually had to use a different spine for both of them - which turned out to be hodge podge. It really is easier using CKLH.
Thanks for the mention of RC History list to go with CKLH. Gee, I wish I'd found that before I bogged through and just did it the brute force way! I'll look into that when I plan the second half of the book - and come back here for recommendations and reviews of supplemental books.

Janet or anyone - do you have an idea of a good resource for the Reformation/Renaissance from a Catholic viewpoint which is balanced? I have lots of living books - no spine for this era. Belloc is good but quite complex even for Junior High.

I did the Middle Ages 2 yrs ago and we used Memoria Press' Famous Men of the Middle Ages. This would be a good jumping off point to find more living books for some of the people discussed. I would say it could be used with kids in grades 3-8 (I used it mainly with my 8th grader)either as a read aloud or on their own. I had him make a timeline as he read.
I also liked Genevieve Foster's The World of Christopher Columbus and Sons
This is a great story book and very thorough in that it covers all the important names and events in World history during the Renaissance.
I did not read the whole book, however, so cannot give an accurate review of the portrayal of Luther, etc. We mainly read it for the parts about Columbus. The parts I did read seemed like a fair presentation.
The Reformation is hard to do - even with older kids. I was struggling to find books for myself to become more informed about that whole period.
I look forward to hearing any more suggestions.

I've just bought this, intending to use it with my 14 and 15 yo's.
For those who are using/have used it, how long do you take to work through a chapter - either with living books, or as is?
