We have a closet with cubbies, but they are overflowing. Each child has one pair of dress, one pair of sneakers one casual and one pair of boots. The teens usually have an extra pair of casual and dress. We have 3 children to a bedroom and they share a small closet, so that is not an option. They are in bunk beds and lofts and the limited under the bed space is already occupied. Ideas? I really want to eliminate the cubby mess.

Parking here and taking notes!
I did whittle down shoes to one for church, one for outside play, and one for everyday. Still....

We have a "sofa table" at the foot of our stairs. Under it is a long wooden box (sort of crate-style) from IKEA, and most of our shoes live there. Ds's hiking boots don't fit well, so they live elsewhere...that's another story!

Well, it's not the prettiest option, but what about the over-the-door shoe holders? They could go inside a closet door, or bedroom door, or any other out of the way door. We rigged something similar (not for shoes though) to hang over the end of the top bunk when we had the girls' beds bunked.
ETA: you could always cover it with something like a little sewn fabric curtain/drape if the shoe-pocket-door-hanger-thingie is too ugly. Or over the cubbies for that matter.

Most of our shoes live on an old rickety shelf in the garage. We made a sort-of mud room area adjacent to the door entering the house. My dh screwed a peg coat rack into the wall, and we set the old shelf next to it. The set up worked very well in the winter, as it kept the snow from boots out of the house.

We usually come in through the garage, so we have 6 small laundry baskets out there-one for each person's shoes. Nick and I just leave casual shoes out there, but we are pretty responsible with picking up our other shoes and putting them in our closet. The kids keep all their shoes in the garage. The girls have old play shoes, newer "school" shoes, church shoes and a pair of flip-flops. We take off our shoes before entering the house.
We have an over the door shoe holder on the inside of the laundry room door. (The laundry room leads to the garage) Socks, slippers, mittens, hats, etc. all live in there.
It's working for now. I hope my girls never get to the point of having more than 4 pair of shoes!!

We have the outdoor shoes in a rubbermaid style tote in the mudroom. The church shoes go into their closet.
There you go.

Church shoes in room closet(they are clean )
One pair of shoes in mudroom bucket for each person.
Boot box in garage(one of those large patio boxes for storing cushions, hoses, etc.--it also works as a seat for putting on boots/shoes)with out of season boots, hiking boots, rubber boots, Teva's, beach shoes, bike shoes, garden sneakers, etc.
