Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do you limit the number of books your children get at the library? We don't. We have two libraries that we go to and last week we checked out 35 from on and today 30 from another. I keep all the library books in two separate bins (one for each library). The kids take them in their rooms, but know to return them. I guess I was just wondering whether or not you tried to guide their selections or let them pick what interests them. I usually will check out some for whatever we're currently studying. However, today my dd checked out one each for about 5 different U.S. states. I guess my question may be better posed on the unschooling forum: how do you follow on so many different leads of the child?

Hey Courtney! I don't limit the number of books we check out--we're only limited by how many will fit in my wheeled cart
If Joseph is interested in a particular topic, I will help him find books on that subject, but I generally just let him pick whatever stikes his fancy. Sometimes his interest is a topic will be fulfilled by one or two books on a topic, but other times we have to get every book in the library on the subject
I've also realized that many interests of Joseph's (I mention him particularly because he's reading independently--Maggie still needs everything read to her) will have to be pursued on his own. There just isn't enough time in the day for me to accompany him on each of his journeys--that's one of the best things about him being able to read, in my opinion.
Hope that helps!

Thanks, Noreen. Yes, Candace is my reader who checks out umpteen books. She's learned how to use the computer to find books. She found 3 books last week on how to draw (one on athletes, one on animals, and on other) and came home and drew from these books for about an hour and a half. Her bday is coming up and she asked for books. Luckily I have some Amazon gift certificates so she is getting books!

Good to hear from you! How's Connecticut?

I do a bit of both--let ds pick some and then I pick other selections. Today we got out about 35 books-- mostly picture books. I don't know if it is stage, but ds will pick mostly the same books and/or author. Since I do the reading, it is nice for me to expand our selection so I bring many booklists to the library.

I started limiting my then 2 yob (now 11 yob) when his interest in dinosaurs led him to want *every* dinosaur book in the library to the detriment of other children who may have a similar interest. My homeschooling sister told me that I might have overdone that unit study. I said, "That was a unit study? I just thought we were borrowing a lot of books and then I read about dinosaurs ad nauseum."

And I limit books now because I have six children plying me with, "Can we borrow this one, too?" Usually, the older kids can take 4 or 5 each, because they carry the books. The younger ones get three. I visit the library almost every week, so I feel this is enough.

We lost a library book relatively recently. Whenever we do that, we halt all borrowing from the library ceases until we find the lost book. We have more than enough at home to sustain us for several years to come.
