Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I really want to start making some clothing items for myself and my kids. The style now seems so loose and flowy...and easy to make. I realize that nowadays it is sometimes less expensive to buy clothes than to make them.

Unfortunately, my sister has spoiled me. She and her husband have good jobs, no kids and will never have kids. She practically gets a new wardrobe every season. The great part is that I get hand-me-downs from her. (We're almost the same size so not everything works) The bad part is that her $150 shirts are sooo soft and fit sooo nicely that I have a hard time buying clothes from Target or AT Loft now. (If you ever have the chance to even try on an "Ella Moss" or "Splendid" shirt, or a "Velvet" brand skirt, you will know what I am talking about.)

Now, my question...does anyone know of any websites or stores that sell really good quality fabric for clothing? We have a Joann and Hancock Fabircs. They are great for home decorating but not the quality I'm looking for for clothing.

Where do the clothing manufacturers get their fabric?

Also...any good book recommendations on clothing construction, or altering and reworking clothes?

Thanks Ladies,
DeAnn

I've generally gotten better quality fabrics buying online, often from co-ops. One website that has nice (but $$ ) fabric is Emma One Sock

You're in my area. Have you tried G Street Fabrics? You might want to check out the one in Falls Church, it's on Rt 50, near the Home Depot (well at least it was a few years ago) The one in Centreville is heavy into quilting fabric. I think the more urban one might be more what you are looking for. I think there are a few of them, the one in Rockvile, MD might be the most clothes oriented one. They also have a website.

I'm not familar with any of the brands you mentioned, so I don't know what the fabric is like.

If you are looking for some of the cool Heather Bailey or Amy Butler designs you can check the quilt shop in Centerville, right near where 29&28 intersect, I can't remember the name of the shop....I'll have to get back to you on that. But I can give you more specific directions if you like.

I just bought some fabric from Sew Mama Sew and she has lots of yummy looking fabric. A bit pricey, but again, very yummy!

Blessings,
Betsie

Not fabric, but as far as books about construction/alterations/fitting, my sister (who's currently teaching sewing and costuming at WAAPA) recommends the Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing. My copy (which she gave to me...) doesn't cover children's/male clothing at all, but fitting for kids is less fiddly because they keep growing—you can use the skills you gain from fitting your own clothes:-) There are lots of older editions of this book around as well.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think there is a G Street Fabrics closer to where I live at Potomac Mills. I forgot about that store. The last time I went there I was strictly looking for home decorating fabrics...I'll have to check out the clothing materials.

Also, those are both great websites! Thanks so much for your input. I think I have a copy of the Complete Guide to Sewing. I'll have to dig it up and look at it again...it's been a while.

Thanks so much!
