Silly question... I have a dress to sell on ebay. Dh bought it for me in the US but it's too small

Size marked is 5. Does that mean it's a junior size? Is there more than one set of women's sizes in the US? I googled it but am still confused.

If any clever person knows the UK equivalent of a size 5, I'd be really grateful.

I don't know the UK equivalent, Doris, but odd size numbers usually indicate a junior's size. It would probably be close to a 4 in women's sizes in the US, which this dress size converter tells me is a Uk size 6.

Junior sizes will be cut shorter and straighter with less room in the bust and hips than a women's size. Hope this helps.

Doris,

I would translate a size 5 as a British size 6 or maybe a small 8. Odd numbers usually mean that the clothes are considered "juniors" not "misses" and the cut is usually somewhat tighter. Think Top Shop vs. Marks.

If you're selling, I would give the American size, the equivalent British size (6 or smallish 8) and the exact measurements of the garment. That way if someone has a favourite dress, they can compare the measuremtns to that.

You're right, it is unbelievably confusing, and the reason why I am not good at department stores in the US. I seem to only shop Old Navy, Gap, Ann Tyalor, and a couple other places. Makes life easier.

Yes, there's such a huge variation in what a given size actually means, and it seems worse here in the US than in the UK. Generally speaking, I THINK your sizes are a number larger than ours -- our 6 is your 8 and so forth.

If it's just smaller than a dress you have, you might take that size and go down one? Sizing is so inexact that you'd probably be all right guesstimating the UK size, as long as you give the US size. Or you could just give the US size and let the potential buyer work it out.

Good luck selling!

Sally

If you are ebaying it...I would definitely measure it and include the bust/waist/hip measurements in the description.....
