Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

If you could spare a few more prayers for our plumbing situation again, we'd appreciate it. We thought we had fixed it last week, but we realized we hadn't today. We are going ot have to bring in a plumber, and I am afraid it may be major. Please pray that it not break out tiny little bank.

And another request:please pray for our dear 9 y.o. son. He has moved up a league in baseball, and he is having a hard time with it. This year players pitch, and he is the only player on his team who has not yet hit the ball(he's on his fourth game). He gets so nervous about it that he is not concentrating on the game, and messes up on the field(his real srength is defense). He is very down, and it is so hard for this mama to see him hurt.

Thank you.

Jen

Praying for your intentions, Jen.

OK, if you or your dh know baseball, please skip the rest of this post. Wearing my mom coach cap, hard learned over four years ...

Have you checked that his bat is the right size for him? A too heavy bat is one of the biggest reasons young players can't hit.   This might help. Something quick not mentioned in this article is...have your child hold their arms straight out (forming a T with their body) and hold the bat straight out (to extend the T) and have them hold it for a good long while. If they can't, the bat is too heavy.

Once you have the bat in order, have him practice hitting off a batting tee a lot. If his coaches have given him instructions on form, have him practice at the tee. A lot. A real lot . The tee helps the player to see the ball at the point of impact and train the head to stay down. Tell him that the tee isn't just for little kids, that good ballplayers of all ages use this tool!

Help him to know where to stand in the box. Most likely, the pitches are coming fast for his swing (the most common problem of youth players) so if he stands in the back of the box (put his back foot close to the back line by the catcher), this alone might help him to have more time to *see* the ball and *catch up* with it. If he has the opposite problem (he is swinging too fast with a light bat and he's trying to kill the ball) then have him stand in the front of the box.

If you aren't getting good instruction on hitting form, check out some DVDs at the library. We've watched several over the years and they all have something to offer.

Reassure your son that the temptation at his age is to swing at anything. By being patient, waiting for his pitch, and practicing good form, he will be hitting better soon! My ds went through a slump when he was ~9yo too. It is hard to go from coach pitch and having the ball lobbed to your bat to having kids wildly pitching all over the place! Stay relaxed, wait for your pitch, watch the ball hit the bat, make contact, follow through. He can do it!!!

I love baseball, and baseball players! I'm praying .

Love,

Thank you everyone.   All prayers and advice are much, much appreciated. This is my guy whose eyes don't work together, so he has no depth perception, and that makes batting hard(and scary).

The plumbing problem isn't looking too good. It looks like we need new laterals, but the plumber thinks he can bide us some time until we can afford the new laterals. Right now we cannot.

Thank you everyone. God bless you.

JEn

P.S. Angie-I appreciate the advice. We'll check out the bat he's using. The coaches are great about telling him where to stand(and they are very respectful of each player), and his form is very nice, but I wonder about the bat.

Just wanted to update everyone and let you know my son hit the ball lastnight! I missed the first hit because I was a little late getting to the game, but dh saw it. It was a pop up right to the pitcher, but he hit it. He was so excited that he ran out of the dugout to tell me when I arrived. The next time he was up to bat, he hit the tying run in. The game ended in a tie. Hooray, Sam!    Thank you so much for your prayers and advice.

Jen

P.S. The plumbing is still a major issue...UGH

oh congrats!! my almost 9 y/o just moved up to kid pitch and he is pitching. (a lefty!!)
It is sometimes very hard to discern how to handle the pitches thrown at you at this age/ability!!
I'll continue to pray for your plumbing woes.

This made my day, Jen! It just doesn't get better than a boy hitting a ball...and hitting in the game tying RBI...that's Big League! I told my boys and they clapped for him! Tell him to keep up the hard work.

Love,

Thank you everyone. We have to wait for the soil to dry out from all of the rain. Then the plumber will come try one more thing. Praying his "one more thing" can stave off new laterals for awhile(and if it can't, I hope he will give us at least a rough estimate).

Angie-I let Samuel read your post. He beamed when he read that your guys cheered for him.

God bless eveyone.

Thank you for the prayers. Our plumbing was fixable after all, which is good because the plumber finally gave us the estimate on new laterals. It was $6,000. He was finally able to unclog the laterals for a fraction of the cost of laterals. At least something is going right. Thank you for the prayers.
