We are having a Memorial Weekend Picnic with our household -- 5 families, 22 people ages 6 months to adult -- including 2 teens, 3 pre-teens, 7 small ones. We'll be bringing badminton sets, footballs, etc. but wanted to get ideas for outdoor games in which everyone (but the 6-month old, I guess) could participate.

Any suggestions?

I second both bocce and croquet...however, my absolute favorite memory from the family reunions of my youth was a big pile of hay that had money (coins), candy (tightly wrapped) and small little prizes(like super balls) hidden in it.

I assume some aunt or uncle simply picked up a hay bale from their local farmer and then they they would open it up on a big tarp and mix in the aforementioned items and the kids could dig through it to their hearts content. Prizes and coins were added throughout the day to keep it fun!

If it is warm outside, we loved playing water balloon volleyball at our family gatherings.

You use a volleyball net or badmitton net and you divide up into two teams on either side of the net (just like volleyball). Then on each team you pair up with a partner. Each person in the pair holds one end of a towel. You put a water balloon on the towel and fling it over the net (1-2-3 UP!). Then a pair on the other side catches it with their towel and flings it back over to the other side. It's really fun and someone is always getting soaked when the balloon crashes on them.

I was intrigued enough to look further when Maryan's link came up empty. It looks similar to, but safer than, horseshoes.

Too late to get one for Memorial Day now, but one of my family's favorite games is Zim-Zam.   Rotor spin game
It's sort of like tetherball but with a tennis ball and rackets.

My brother has made a set for under $30. If you're concerned about using golf balls for bolos you could use rubber balls of similar size and weight to construct a more child friendly bolo set.
