Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Carmen Humphrey will be coming to our local parish this week. She has allegedly been given the gift of healing hands. Dh and I are strongly considering seeing her and praying for a cure for our son's autism. Or at least for a cure to his oversensitive hearing.

What do you think? Is there any validity to her? I worry that if we do go, and nothing happens, that our faith will be badly shaken. Frankly, I was a bit surprised at dh's willingness to go. He's a very logical person and not one to pray openly. In fact, the only time I notice him praying, outside of grace, is after receiving communion where he becomes immersed in prayer for a bit.

Has anyone heard of her? Has anyone visited a healer? I want to try and yet am very scared or what will happen to my faith if it fails! “I do believe, help my unbelief!”

I'm scared to try this. Should I be?

So, nobody's ever gone to a healer? Or you all thinks this is nuts?

I read your post and I honestly have never heard of this woman and didn't really have time to read a lot of the link. I do believe in healing but as far as an individual person goes, I would want to know what my local bishop had to say about her/him before I went. I think there needs to be some kind of approval that needs to come forth from your diocese. I have gone to healing masses, etc., and they were very powerful, prayerful experiences. They were always led by an approved priest who gave explicit instructions to those in attendance not to stop any medications, therapies, etc., without first consulting with their doctors. They have also said that sometimes the healing happens in a way we don't expect such as spiritual healing instead of physical healing. One does have to be careful and discerning with this type of thing as some vulnerable people (I am not saying you!) can get carried away by the moment and end up focusing on the lay healer, visions, etc., and not on the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the true healer. HTH!

Thanks Anne,

I had a long conversation with my mom about it last night. She mentioned that she experienced a cure of a long standing issue with her shoulder via a healer on TV. It was rather unexpected but she was very grateful. She's still not sure if it was brought about by the healer or by prayer.

I'm not sure if we'll see this person or not. Mom said the same thing you did and our priest also gave the same instructions that you mentioned. I haven't heard of her before either and can't find an opinion of her from our local clergy.

Maybe we just need to pray more...

My recommendation is - if in doubt don't do it. I've learnt in life, going ahead in doubt is not good. But how can you get assurance from such things, do they need their bishop's approval for example? Unfortunately I don't know enough about these things.

Is it worth talking to your parish priest and seeing if your son can receive the anointing of the sick if they have healing Masses in your parish?....I heard on EWTN a good priest say that it can be received by those who have chronic health problems even though they are not life threatening.

I receive this sacrament regularly since I am on medication (thyroid medication) that I would die without. This is a most powerful sacrament and something that you can be sure will benefit your son physically and spiritually.
