Oh brother. That IS sad.
Thankfully we have ALL of these books, including the Caroline and Rose Years, etc. And no one is touching ours!

I remember Melissa Wiley talking about this on her blog, some time back. I went right out and bought the complete set (paperback) so we would not miss out on it. I wish I could have purchased them as hardbacks... I love the Garth Williams art.

And it was talked about a bit here, too. It is really sad. I saw the new covers myself yesterday at a Scholastic warehouse sale. I do not like the photo covers.

I noticed that Lissa's blog links aren't on her posts. You can go here and read all the details. It's so unbelievably sad. Those books are really the best of the best of children's literature.

I don't like the changes. I prefer the other illustrations. I still bemoan the change of the Encounter Series by the Daughters of St. Paul!
As a frequenter of used book sales, it's really easy to find Little house books with the pictures of Garth Williams. bookfinder.com and eBay and such...just search for the best prices. They might not be in "like new" condition.
I actually enjoy both Garth Williams and the Helen Sewell (sp) illustrations that came first. I was thinking of trying to track down those copies, too. I'm never satisfied.
I've got my son interested in the Little House. I found (used) many of the First Little House books (which are reminiscent of Garth Williams) and he's hooked. I don't think it will be hard to graduate to the chapter books in due time. I can't wait.

Oh, you girls with small boys have inspired me ... I thought I'd be wasting my money to buy these books when I just have 2 small boys, but hearing that other little boys are enjoying the stories is encouraging.

I guess I shall head to the local bookstore and purchase these asap! What a bummer that "they" are changing something else that does not need to be changed.
Blessings,

Be checking library sales as well. I found four Melissa Wiley and four original in pretty good condition (library bound) at our library for a song. Some local libraries might start getting rid of the old to make room for the new.

The books are so filled with details of Pa's hunting, trapping and building, that my boys have always been interested in them!

Hi, everybody! I was seeing traffic to the blog from this post and thought I'd pop in to see what was up. Thank you all so much for your very kind words--especially what you said, Elizabeth!
There have been newish developments since last I posted on this subject (and actually I was just about to update the blog, too). Not good news, exactly, but better, in a way, than the last update. Basically, the abridgements bombed--as I KNEW they would, told Harper they would when I begged them to reconsider. Why would anyone want chopped up versions of the books?
So after publishing only one or two abridged editions in each series, Harper canceled them. For me this was a relief in that it means fewer mangled versions of my books floating around in the world.
But not totally happy news, of course, because they are not returning to the original editions. The entire line of prequels/sequels is being allowed to go out of print. When current print runs are gone, that's it for Martha, Charlotte, Caroline, and Rose.
Most of the unabridged editions were remaindered when the new ones were launched, so you might be able to find those in Book Closeout stores and other discount/remainder stores. Online, I'm seeing ridiculously high prices in many places. The FUN Books link at the top of this thread has pretty reasonable prices considering what other retailers are asking. I know those folks personally (they hosted my signing at NACHE one year) and they are really nice people.
I try to keep an eye out for online sources with good prices, so if you hear of any, let me know!
About Laura's books--you can still buy them new with the Garth Williams art in the fancier colorized editions. The art was removed from the editions with the photo covers, but all the text is intact, THANK GOD.
And thanks for pointing out about my "missing link," Elizabeth... I remember going in to update my info at some point and then getting sidetracked. I must have left the job half done. Typical of me! Off to fix my siggy now.

I'm a bit confused. I saw on the Harper Collins site a countdown to the release of a new box set in October. Is this new set going to be different?

Melissa, I'm pretty sure those are the colorized versions I mentioned. It may be that they're reissuing a set w/ the black and white art, though, now that the repackage w/ no art & photo covers has been discontinued. I'll pop a note to my old editor and check.
