Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My near 6 year old likes the Bob books a lot. He memorizes them and "reads" them to little brother.

When reading the Bob books together do you correct your child's mistakes? My son isn't "reading"... he is looking at the pictures and making guesses. When we try to stick to the text, he gets kind of annoyed when I keep correcting him or reminding him to look at the word and sound it out.

I am still using them, because he likes them a lot... just not sure if I should be cracking down on "reading properly" more. I don't want the books to become a killjoy. How do you do it?

Bob Books were the very first books my son could read. I introduced the first one (from the first set) to him when I thought he was ready to read it, and gave him a new one about once a week, or whenever I thought he was ready.

He learned to read so quickly & effortlessly that I only purchased the first set of Bob Books. We went straight to early readers from the library after that.

When they are ready to read them I don't allow them to guess anymore. I place my finger on the top of the sentence and move it from word to word only when the previous word was read correctly. I do not say anything just allow my finger to do the talking. I had too many cousins who didn't learn to read properly because they were too busy guessing and had to go back and do intensive phonics in 4th grade with Sylvan because they couldn't read-so I am a bit paranoid about it. However, it does not seem to have dimmed their enthusiasm for reading. My oldest gets put in time out every day for skipping her chores to read a bit longer....

I am using the Bob books with my 7yo who has what I'm sure is dyslexia and so really needs to take his time. I stick with one book until he can sound the words out smoothly and begin to see them as words, not individual sounds. They are so encouraging to him. He is so proud of himself when he reads one, and gets excited each day as he reads it better and better. Now that he has a little collection that he can read, he thrills himself by sitting with his little pile and reading.

Ellie, phonics and precision surely have their place in reading. Yet so does a more global approach. When children *guess* at words or tell the story of the pictures while reading, this is part of the learning process as well, especially for children who are more of a big picture learning type. These children can become quickly discouraged at the *details* of reading, especially if they are not developmentally ready for all those details. Good adult readers do *guess* at words and ommit words as they *push* their reading along while being able to retain comprehension. Our family has had good success by allowing our children to approach reading from both the phonetic (detail) and global (big picture). I encourage any reading activity that helps a child identify themselves as a reader.

If you are concerned about ensuring proper phonetics and word identification, perhaps you can use one book for that reason for now. Pick a book that's over his current reading level, let's say The Cat in the Hat, and work on it together. Let him have his Bob Books as his independent global reading.

Best wishes as you find a good fit for you and your young reader!

Love,
