My 3 1/2 year old son has been potty-trained for a good 3 months or so now. Not perfectly, he still wets overnight and won't poo in the potty *at all*...but, you know, he's been staying dry during the day really well as long as you remind him to go. Well, the last couple of weeks he has decided he'd much rather pee all over the floor. It's not an accident, he strips off his pants and underwear and just pees in whatever room he happens to be in, and then he comes and tells me about it (usually...I have found a surprise or two). Now he's doing this with poo sometimes too. I'm losing my mind here! Why is he doing this?!!

What's been going on in your life, Melanie? Has it been hectic or something upsetting lately? How are your reactions to this?
Not to sound like a pyschologist, but after seeing the poo issues with my son, it's a lot about control and getting attention, even if it's just negative attention.

I'm so sorry, Melanie! That is so hard. I agree with Jenn as well. I know you are soon to deliver (prayers!) so perhaps the excitement is kicking in? I know my kids will backslide a little when the new baby comes. I plan to whip out the timer again, and have the reminder for Mommy and the kids to stay dry and go potty.
Perhaps if you tried a timer, and brought him/reminded him to at least run and try to go potty, he would be getting some good attention and "mommy time" if he does well.
I am thinking of you!

Well, we've got the new baby coming, but I don't know how much of that he even really "gets"...he's not as verbal as my daughter was at this age so it's hard to say...we've just talked about it in passing, kind of, reading books about having a baby come, etc., but I don't think he really understands it's coming soon or anything.
My reactions...lol. Well, at first, I was very calm and cool about it,,,"oh, let's clean this up, let's sit on the potty, remember pee pee likes to go in the potty", etc. The last few days,,,I've been, ah, a little less ah, tolerant...I thought maybe being more firm about it would be the way to go when the other didn't work. But it's only gotten worse. Yesterday and the day before he peed on the floor all day long.
It may be a control issue. He's always been a very laid-back, easy going child, but right around the 3 1/2 mark he suddenly seemed to "turn three" on me. He's still a great, happy kiddo most of the time, but definitely more contrary than he used to be, has started telling me "NO" and such, whereas he never did that before.

In my experience, it's the quiet ones who know more than they let on!
