Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just waned to call attention to a great blog I've been reading by a Montessori teacher. There are some really nice posts lately demonstrating how to use some of the more complex math materials, like the multiplication and division boards, and stamp game. Good stuff! Check it out here:The Moveable Alphabet

Theresa, I wish I wouldn't have looked at this post. It gives me <*gasp*> ideas! And then I start looking at Alison's while thinking about the pitfalls that paper math has for young ones. I've got one struggling with borrowing, one struggling with simple subtraction, and one struggling with long division. And look! It looks as though Montessori has answers for it all:

Test Tube Division ~ Can someone explain to me how to use this?

What would you use to illustrate simple subtraction? Are there any better or worse things to use? Anything good for borrowing and for subtracting numbers in the hundreds from numbers in the hundreds or thousands?

And *then* I wonder whether I'll buy a bunch of stuff and it will sit in my cupboard, unused.

Tina, there is a heirarchy in the Montessori materials that goes from most concrete to increasing levels of abstraction.
Start with the Golden beads. You can do all 4 functions with them. Then the next level of abstraction would be the strip boards (addition and subtraction), bead boards (multiplication and division), and the bead chains (many uses). Then the stamp game, and then the dot game, I believe.
The test tube division is, I think, way too fiddly for the benefit you get from it. But others will certainly disagree. I really, really like the division bead board for division. If you read through the directions on the site I linked, it just makes so much sense. Stamp game, too. My dd caught on to that very quickly due to her work with the golden beads.
But again, start with Golden beads and the number cards to go with them. Go to the MWEI website and find the directions for using them. They are wonderful (very similar to base ten materials).
I'll be glad to help if you have additional questions.

I wish I was more versed on all of these learning methods. I was sort of thrown into this whole homeschooling thing and there are just some things we hate. I want to remedy that.

So ... what's the MWEI website?

And one more thing ... when you say Golden Beads, do you mean the $350 version (ouch!) or the $4.00 (no cards) version?
