What would the negatives be to use a large rubbermaid tub (with holes drilled for air) vs. one of the various worm bins available?

This is what we did for our worm bin. We made it about 3 years ago and it's fine.

There are directions on the Seattle Tilth website for how to do this. I'll link later if you can't find it. We actually didn't drill holes for air, but put little air vents in the side....really cheap at Lowe's.

I found the instructions at Seattle Tilth for an "Off the Shelf" worm bin.

Since you have experience with a worm bin, please...one more question? Are earthworms from the garden OK or redworms? Or does it REALLY matter?

Well, we got the redworms from the Tilth. I think they will eat faster, but I cant remember exactly.
