Has anyone heard about this? Someone sent me this. I looked on a few places that sell bulk items and some are sold out of things like flour, wheat, and rice.

Well, I heard an economic analysis of the rice rationing at Sam's Club; basically, the analyst said that warehouse clubs have very, very low profit margins and that Sam's didn't want to raise the price of bulk rice because they felt their customers would be unhappy. Instead, they chose to limit customers to 4 bags.
Now, 100 lbs. of rice is a lot of rice.
I think people must have freaked out, not understood what was really happening and run to Sam's to clean them out. Certainly our commissary was out of bulk rice today.
Rice is available here. It's a bit more expensive than it used to be, but American rice growers produce twice as much rice as American consumers buy.

Sam's Club and Costco are officially limiting the amount of basmati, jamine and long grain rice that people can buy at one time. Not that it's small amounts or anything.. the bags that they're limiting are 25-50lb bags I believe..

My Filipino husband first heard this a couple of weeks ago from a co-worker...he has been nervous about it ever since. I can't even describe how attached he is to his rice!
I know that at our local Asian market the prices have just about doubled on the 50-pound bags, which is what we buy. They are still available here, though--just more costly.

Another list sent this Glenn Beck transcript.
My husband's analysis is that isn't a true shortage, but now there is rationing at stores because of the knee jerk selfish reaction of people buying more than they need in a state of panic. Hoarding is causing the problems.
It is not fun to have rising prices. We use rice very often in our meals, since we don't do wheat, but we're a smaller family than most here.

Basically, people are panicking because of the rising gas and food prices and the general state of the economy. It's kind of like Y2K all over again except this time people are scared of another Great Depression. Some stocking up can always come in useful as a tenant of frugality, but now it is being taken to excess.

Wow, Kristie! That's terrible!
We always keep a stockpile of canned goods in case of hurricanes and power outages. I hadn't thought much about flour (we bake a lot, but I don't buy bulk flour), but it might be good to start tracking prices a little more closely.
Would anyone like to start a separate thread on emergency supplies?

We are going shopping today, but on our last trip I noticed the 50# bags went from $12 to $18.99.
I've never checked the price before, but have been considering buying that amount because of the savings of buying rice in bulk. I plan to look during our trip today.

I had been buying King Arthur flour at our local store because it was cheaper there than my natural foods coop. Just this week the price of a 5 lb bag of flour went from $2.89 to over $5!

I completely missed the price at the surprise of completely empty shelves (with the exception of instant boxes... boil-in-a-bag rice) and a sign that said something like "due to the world wide rice crisis..."

I buy my flour in 50lbs bags at an Amish run dry goods store in Shipshewana. Last year I could buy a 50# bag for around $14-$15, I bought two bags maybe 2 months ago and the price was $25 each, today my dh ordered a bag, the price was $29. It's hard not to overreact and panic.

It was $6.00 for King Arthur Flour at my local store last week. I bought Gold Medal instead, for $4.00. It's crazy!

Barbara.. in a country that has to be told to keep 3-7 days of emergency supplies.. it's interesting that people are trying to stock up now. I've always found it to be a money and time saver (when you have a year's supply it's hard to run short and have to run to the store)
IMO, hoarding really comes in when people buy more than they can use and end up wasting the food. Those that stock up for however long as long as it's what their family can use before the food goes bad.. that's just stocking up.
And all things considered.. right now I'm afraid many may be falling into the hoarding category.. grabbing huge bags of food that they have no clue how to store longer term and will end up with it going racid or moldy or buggy or something.

Oh and Nancy.. I think if you search on "pantry" or "stocking" you could find the threads from a while back about how to stock a pantry with longer than a week or so supply.
