My ds 10 has terrible allergies in the Spring. I believe the tree pollen is the main culprit, and we live in the middle of woods. 
We used to have success with homeopathic Tree Pollen and Claritin. Nothing is helping now, or not helping enough. His eyes are so itchy and puffy and he is sneezing and VERY irritable. Breastmilk in the eyes helps but not for long.
There has to be something out there that really helps this. Any suggestions?

I have used the natural remedy Quercetin and that does help some.
Zyrtec you can get now without a prescription. It is stronger.
Other than shutting windows, getting an air purifier is extremely helpful! Could not live without it...
If you get a small one "bedroom sized" it can also be carried to any other room he needs to be in.
The one we bought is discontinued, but it has a HEPA filter. That's very effective.

Check with your doctor about a nasal steroid spray - eg Nasonex etc - these changed my life - and I have never had to use constantly. I believe there is a new one out which treats eye symptoms too - Veramist - but not sure if it for kids under 12.
Zyrtec kids works for me too.
Make sure he changes clothes every time he comes from out and washes his hair every night.
Vitamin C helps too.
Try a cold compress on his eyes.

We deal with this every year. Here's what we do...and it still doesn't completely do away with the symptoms:
Alavert daily
Singulair daily
washing sheets - almost daily
changing clothes as soon as they come in from playing
wipe down with damp cloth when they come in
baths almost daily followed by generous lathering with mild lotion - my daughters gets skin symptoms too
shoes stay outside

vitamin C helps ALOT
When you have an allergic reaction your body uses up vit. C. The less vit. C you have.. the worse your allergies can get. I've been able to control my hay fever symptoms (same as your son at that age) in the last 10 yrs or so almost entirely with vit. C. I generally take 4000mg a day during allergy season.. there's some in my prenatals and I've seen stuff that says for pregnant women to limit their intake to 5000mg. So that works pretty well. Only very very occationally will I have an attack that goes beyond what I can handle with the vit. C at that doseage.
For a child I'd look into what they can reasonably take.. and probably look into the esterized vitamin C's since those are easier on the tummy and more is absorbed into your system.

My dd has a horrible allergy to oak tree pollen, which is everywhere in our neck of the woods now. She takes Zyrtec, as Claritin didn't help at all anymore. She took Singular for a while several years ago, but one of the side effects of that medication is "vivid dreams," which translated to nightmares every night for her. We obviously stopped that medication! She also has a nasal inhaler (Nasonex), but it gave her such headaches that we stopped it, and she began using a neti pot twice a day. The neti pot helps tremendously. It's most important to use at night, to rinse the inhaled pollen and irritants out before bed. Nightly showering and hair washing help remove the pollen, as well. We tried having her go without the Zyrtec, and just tried to be vigilant with the neti pot, clean hair and body, clean sheets, etc., but the Zyrtec really helps a lot.

That is so interesting about Vit. C.
I also heard, when buying the stuff to make my pregnancy tea (that I haven't made in weeks--I keep forgetting), that nettle helps allergies.
Also, they said that rose hips have a ton of concentrated Vit. C--so, an herbal tea with rose hip and nettle might help (I have it loose and mix those things with raspberry leaf and Hibiscus and it is a pretty red and very yummy).

I second the recommendation of the neti pot. It can be very effective - especially if you use it every day as a general rule, not just when allergies are flaring.

My son can't go outside right now without eyes streaming, itching and nose running and sneezing. Poor dear. We have the A/C on, windows closed (especially in the am), and Zyrtec works best for us. He also uses Rhinocort when he's really congested for short periods of time. I'm hoping it rains tomorrow to cut down the oak pollen. It is VERY HIGH!!!

Is there some sort of homeopathic remedy to head this off for next year? My son had such an acute reaction to the pollen this year that the doctor prescribed for him an inhaler. Thought I would have to rush him to the ER in NYC! (pre inhaler)
We have a netti pot. He is on Zyrtec. I haven't tried the vitamin C. We change the sheets, pillow cases, and he showers at bed time. We have him on lots of vitamins now. He is doing so much better...
Just wanted to know if there is some preventative...

I do Zyrtec. For eyes, my dh turned me on to Zaditor drops. They are over the counter. Do one drop in each eye in the morning and night. It may take a couple of days, but then it'll be an amazing difference. Keep with it for 2 weeks even if you feel good. I've tried lots of drops before and these are the best I've found. It use to be prescription, but is now over the counter.
