Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a good friend who is going through the adoption process. She and her dh have 2 boys, and the youngest one (going on 3) is having a hard time understanding where the "new baby" is. Does anyone have any recommendations on a book on adoption about having to expectantly wait, without a good timeline, for a preschooler? TIA.

Karen Katz's Over the Moon would be a good one for this, I think. It shows a couple adopting their first child (from a Latin-American country), so it's not exactly your friends' experience, but for the first few pages (if I remember right), the couple is waiting and waiting for "the call," while everyone around asks when the baby is coming. It's a cute book, and it would be great for a preschooler.

I'm not good at links...sorry...dh is home to "help me". Here is a partial list of some of our books...

Tell Me Again about the Night I was Born (Jamie Lee Curtis)
The Day We Met You (Phoebe Koehler)
We Wanted You (Liz Rosenberg)
How I was Adopted (Joanna Cole)

Over the Moon is a great book too.

Hope these help a bit. The waiting is soooo long for these little ones. My ds was such a trooper waiting for his baby sister, but it was the hardest thing for him.

Praying for your friends..what a marvelous miracle is coming their way...

Marybeth

Thank you so much for the recommendations.    I had seen all of those books when I did a search online, but you know it's much better to hear from others who actually have read the books. I'm going to forward these recommendations to my friend. They have their home study on Monday and Tuesday. I knew I could count on the women here to help.

This book is not about waiting but is my favorite toddler book for adoptive families - A Mother for Choco.

It is a lovely book about a little bird named Choco looking for a mommy. He asks different animals if they can be his mother and they reply they can't because they don't look like him. He finally finds Ms. Bear who asks him "What would a mommy do?" Choco gives many answers - she would hug me, sing with me, etc. When she asks if she can be his mommy he reples "but you don't look like me." She invites him home for pie and he meets her children - an alligator, and pig and a hippo. Choco sees that families don't have to look alike to be a family.

The book never says the word adoption or cross-cultural placement or any other words grown-ups use. It simply shows that a family is made of people who love one another, even if they don't look alike.

Good luck to your friends. They are blessed to have such a supportive friend.
