My dd really enjoys math and so far it has been fairly easy for her.
She is finishing up Math-U-See Zeta this week and I was just going to go on with Pre-Algebra by the same people but thought I would see what else was out there. Anything that you found your mathy child really enjoyed at this point? Is pre-Algebra necessary for my dd (may be a strange question, but I just can't remember what I did way back then!) Has anyone used Jacob's Algebra and would that come after a season of Pre-Algebra??
Thanks.

Bumping this up...
I looked into Jacob's Algebra and it looked like it would be a good fit for my dd. Has anyone used it out there? Where did you find it??

I've used it. We like it. It is one of the options with Kolbe now so I know they, at least, sell the book. I forget where I ordered mine as I am at least 3 editions ago . They do not have problems all worked out for you in the AK so you do have to have some confidence to be able to show your child how or why an answer is supposed to be what it is, if they are stuck OR have someone to ask if you are unable to do this yourself. Also the AK is a bit more trouble to use than most as certain problem sets are in the back of the TB and others are in the AK. It is nice that they have several different tests to use. Kolbe makes their own tests to go with this (including comprehensive tests at the semesters).
As far as pre-Algebra, I really do not think it is all that necessary, in general. I am not familiar with Zeta, however. If that is part of Math - U - See, you may want a good review year to give the actual math vocabulary, unless they've changed from when we used them. A good pre-Algebra would serve that purpose.

We're using Jacob's as well. I bought it used through Cathswap, I think. I agree with everything Janet said. We use Math-U-See before Jacobs, but it's the old MUS curriculum which contains some pre-algebra. You might run down the topic list for Math U See Pre-algebra to see what it includes. Much of it is covered in Jacobs (negative numbers, order of operations, distributive and other properties). Math U See's book also includes some basic geometry and other stuff too, though (temperature conversions,...).

I didn't know much about Zeta, so I don't know which would be a better fit, but I like both Key to Algebra AND Jacob's. Key to Algebra might move too slowly if your daughter is a whiz at math. I like its clean layout and the inductive approach -- giving some examples and letting the child figure out the principle. But it breaks the processes into simple steps and that might not be challenging enough for your dd?
Jacob's has a more crowded, meaty text layout suitable for high schoolers, but it seems possible it might seem confusing for a younger child unless you were going to help her through it.
I don't think you strictly need a pre-Algebra for Jacob's; it tends to start with the concept in non-Algebra form and then move to the variables. But it would probably move pretty fast for someone who wasn't quite solid on decimals, fractions, ratios and the like.

Actually Janet I am going to go with Key to for my math phobic son as a pre algebra course as I know he will need it and because he has liked the format of their books in the past.
But I am going to order Jacob's for my daughter. She is into Math and finds it a breeze. So thank you for your great input (and sorry about the mysterious and confusing math double posting!)

Great advice Willa. I think since I am ordering the Key to for my ds and Jacob's for my daughter, we could probably use the Key to books when dd needs more clarification in the Jacob's. She seems pretty solid on the things you have listed and I figure we will take the text as it comes and slow down when necessary. Both my dh and I loved math at school so hopefully we can help- although my post pregnancies brain doesn't seem quite as limber as it used too (It sometimes gets it's best workouts these days reading your meaty posts Willa! )

One more thing....any ideas where to find the Jacob's book used??? I have perused quite a bit online but haven't found many good prices yet (though I am ordering from Canada).

There are a couple of listings on Vegsource (this is the 7th-12th grade page). You can use the "find on this page" feature of your browser and search for "jacobs" and "jacob's".
Someone at
Cathswap is also selling it, but it says continental US. Maybe if she hasn't sold it she would be willing to ship to you.
There are also some on ebay. This guy says he ships worldwide.

Thanks Janette. I'll get my names in on a few of those and see if they ship to Canada. It always narrows it down a bunch!

WOW Janette. Another huge thank you
I have avoided Vegsource as it hurts my eyes to scan through all their ads. But I tried the search function and that made all the difference. Thank you.
