Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our ds Christian is about to make his FHC in a couple of weeks and aside from a very nice navy tie with chalices on it - I have nothing for the boy to wear.

I've been putting it off - and now of course I'm in a panic.

At the suggestion of a suit my dh looked at me incredulously - it does seem like a great expense for something ds is not going to enjoy wearing for one day.

And while we do look at the Sacraments as something to be celebrated we do in a way that reflects our means and lifestyle.

We could afford a cheap suit - I just really don't want to buy one . If I could pick out the suit of my choice, I would, but then there's the whole getting him to wear all those clothes - I'm just not seeing it! I think if I'm lucky I can get him to wear a tie.

We put a lot effort into preparing our hearts for this great moments - right now I'm just feeling very distracted by something that really shouldn't be the focus - clothes!

This was so much easier with the girls...not sure why.

I was thinking nice new navy pants, a white oxford shirt and his FHC tie... enough? Not special enough? Am I silly to worry over this?

I think the pants, shirt & tie sound wonderful!! We just had a son make his FHC and most of the boys wore exactly what you described. My ds wore khaki pants, oxford shirt, tie and a navy sport coat we picked up really inexpensively at Target.

I've seen lots of dress pants (khaki or navy or black) with a white dress shirt and a tie! They look great!

If no sport coat like Margaret mentioned above, I'm wondering if black or navy pants are a bit more "dressy/formal"???? DH seems to think so, but it's not really a bit deal.

Donna, I think what you have in mind sounds lovely. Our son is only 4, but when I was jokingly telling dh how excited I was to dress DD up like a little bride for FHC, DS got all emotional over not having a veil to wear. It is such a special moment spiritually and emotionally, I am sure, and wanting your son to look nice and feel good is a part of that too. God bless him.

Navy sport coats turn up quite often at second hand shops, too!

I agree with the others. If you can find a cheap sport coat, go with the khakis and tie. Without a sport coat, I would go with dark pants and a tie.

I think little boys seem harder only because they don't have a set FHC "uniform" like little girls. What ever your little man wears will be fine and if you want to make him look and feel extra special, you can always pin a boutonniere on his jacket or shirt. I made a tiny little carnation one with blue ribbon for my son who wanted to wear something in honor of the Blessed Virgin. It definitely went a long way to say to everyone that this was not just your ordinary occasion.

Yep.. nice pants, shirt and tie or some sort of suit works for the boys here just fine.

My son has really liked getting dressed up special for Church so I found a white dinner jacket on ebay (so not $$$) and he wore that with black pants and a white shirt and tie. (we already owned those)

I've got the jacket tucked away so that hopefully his brothers will be close enough to size to use the same jacket

His FHC class was something like 7 boys and 2 girls.. the boys were going around checking each other's ties to see who was wearing clip ons and who was wearing tied ties no value judgment.. just checking it out. it was very cute.

My ds will be receiving in 2 weeks and I'm a little disappointed that we can't make more of the "wrapping paper" of the gift of self that ds is giving. Dd 1 & 2 were "wrapped" sooo lovely! But he's a beautiful gift all the same.

Our parish gave us guidelines - boys had to wear dark pants and at least a collared shirt.

We got a suit anyway . It was Communion & Confirmation, so he wore a dark suit, with a red tie. But it was a good price at Burlington Coat Factory. If it had been expensive, we wouldn't (couldn't) have done it.

Thanks everyone - I am feeling much better about it all now, I am glad I asked.

I do sort of wish we were doing the whole beautiful white Communion suit for my little man or I guess I felt like I should want to do it!!! But it is not really *us*.
It would have been a battle - we'll go with dark navy pants, white shirt and this is the tie I have for him in the blue. I don't know much about this company the tie came from but they did ship very promptly for free!

I like the idea of a boutonniere too, something to remind us of Our Lady - there's a May crowning the next day after Mass - maybe I'll have a small bouquet with similar flowers for him to leave for her.

Oh my goodness, this is such a relief to start to have a plan!

That's exactly how I felt Donna.. there's so much about little girls communion dresses and so little about stuff for boys.. that just settling for ourselves what we wanted to do was a huge relief.

I felt the same way..preparing hearts and then wanted ds to look nice too. We had dress requirements from our religious education office.

Dark pants, shoes, white collared shirt and a white tie....

Donna-he is going to look great! I love the flowers for Mary. Very sweet touch.

I'm getting so excited for the big day!! Only nine more days left...wow!!!!
