Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What sorts of chores do you expect from your 9 yo girls? How much time do they take to complete?

I feel like I'm constantly nagging my 9 yo dd to get her chores completed. She goes to do her chores willingly enough, but every two seconds she's distracted by something if I am not standing right next to her. We have switched her chores around, set timers, taken away priveleges... but nothing seems to work. It still often takes her over an hour to unload and load the dishwasher. (It sometimes takes her almost an hour to get dressed in the morning, too!!!)

I know that she likes to think, and that she is not trying to be disobedient. But she can't take two hours to do her chores because she needs to be doing other things -- like school work or getting ready for bed. My dh used to read to the kids before bed every night, but he hasn't been able to for a long while because she is often still completing her chores at 8:30 PM -- as tonight.

Your daughter sounds just like one of mine who happens to be the same age as yours. Chores that she has which we rotate with siblings are:
Pick up hallway
Pick up living room
Vacuum living room
Empty garbage
Start laundry
Put laundry away
Empty dishwasher
Clear and wipe down table
Sweep kitchen and dining room
Clear and set table
Tidy children's bathroom
Play with toddler
Fill dishwasher

She only has 4 of the above chores on any given day and is supposed to spend 15 minutes cleaning her room, too.

My children are responsible for basically the same chores Christine has listed with the exception of filling the dishwasher. However, DH would like for me to hand that chore over. I've hesitated because the kitchen is my "zone/responsiblity".

Oh, picking up dog stuff is another one that is done daily.

They are also responsible for a zone (one room...not their bedroom).

Certain responsibilities aren't done daily...one child is responsible for filling and organizing the pantry. Another the frozen foods....

Olivia used to gripe a bit about emptying the dishwasher. She still doesn't like it, she says because she's not tall enough to reach the cabinets, lately I haven't heard complaints.

A sort of side question....but when do your children do their chores (besides kitchen chores)? I only ask because we usually do them first thing but sometimes I like to get moving on some of our other things instead. But if I leave it till later on in the day I find it is easier to be missed (as I write this I see this is more my problem, of not keeping them to it, then theirs!)

Thanks,
Kristie

Angela - I was having the same problem with my 8 yo twin ds. One thing that has really helped is for me or my dh to do the chore with them when we are able. The other is to have chores shared with another sibling - eg the twins empty the dishwasher together (sometimes this can work out badly when they mess about and take even longer!!) What works for the boys is competition - who can get their chores done the quickest.
