This is a beautiful book about two boys during the Civil War. A friend of mine recommended it back in February and I just now got around to reading it. It has inspired many conversations already; everything from the Civil War to Southern accents vs. Northern accents. It is a sad story so it might not be well received by children who are more sensitive. My oldest son really enjoyed it, but my daughters haven't read it yet.

While the frightened soldier is nursed back to health under the care of Pink’s mother, Moe Moe Bay, he begins to understand why his new found friend is so adamant on returning to the war; to fight against "the sickness" that is slavery.

We read this one in our Polacco pile yesterday too -- I'd never read it, but seen it. I'm so glad we read it yesterday! It really is a wonderful, unique story. This i a must-read for those doing the Civil War!

We read this book last week as part of our civil was studies. I had one child who was disturbed by the ending (very sensitive little girl), but everyone else really liked it.

I mentioned the sad ending for that very reason. I didn't read it to my daughters at all. I just don't think they could handle that yet. Glad the others liked it!

I wrote this in the Author Fieta post over at the Living Literature posts. I wished I had known this before we started reading in the library.
I just got home from the library, and I picked out more Patricia Polacco books to add to our big pile.
I figured we would read some at the library because I am reaching my limit as to how many books I can have out at one time.
Well, the first book I choose was Pink and Say, I didn't read the book jacket, just dived in. Well, we were all by the end of this story. It was beautifully written, but I just wasn't ready for the emotion or I wouldn't have read it at the library.
