Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Last night the kids all had stomach aches from eating grass.

We always have a garden that they may eat from in the summer (cherry tomatoes, green beans...) and there are special places around the yard where things like peppermint and basil grow...but they're not growing yet.

They're eating things like catnip, daylily leaves, and I'm afraid that they're going to "discover" something poisonous. I know some things we have like rhubarb leaves and lily of the valley are very dangerous. I try to be outside with them and attentive to what they're doing, but...

Last year we had a rule that they had to ask me before they ate anything from the yard, but one of my girls, in particular, still puts everything in her mouth. I don't want her sitting on the porch watching everyone else play all spring...

Anyone else have experience with this? Ideas for making these moments more teachable? Right now I'm just reacting.

Hey Stephanie! My only idea is to teach your kids about the plant parts - a basic Montessori idea - and then explain that the part that's most edible fresh is the fruit of the plant.

If you want to try making tea, you could read up on that and teach the kids to look for things for that purpose.

In our yard, "flowers" or other neat-looking plants (like foxtails!) are picked and "given to Mother Mary" - that is, placed at the foot of her statue. The only thing permitted to go in the mouth is from the garden, and must first be washed off with the hose. (And for a variety of reasons, our "garden" last year consisted of 2 cherry tomato plants in potted containers!)

Because of the way our yard is, my kids can't really be out there without constant supervision. I use the word "yuck" for all things non-edible and just don't let them eat it. (Same goes for sidewalk chalk!)
