How exciting to see Pope Benedict XVI come off the plane! And how wonderful to have Bush meet him there -- the first time ever to meet a dignitary at the airport!
We are so excited!

I can't seem to find a good coloring page of the flag and BXVI's papal arms.
I found this coloring page.
Ds wants to wave it at the pope when he sees him on TV.
Anyone have suggestions?

I have the chills - so awesome!
Jenn - I am on my way out to the orthodontist - if you look at my blog post on the Pope - the Pflaum site has a coat of arms coloring page. I also have a coloring page of the Holy Father - Matt likes the first one.

We saw the interview with President Bush on EWTN and I loved his explaination for why he went to the airport. Needless to say, we are BIG Bush fans over here and it touches me that he publically expresses his admiration for Catholic saints (Mother Teresa) and the Holy Fathers.

We watched it on EWTN too! It was very exciting and I was so proud of our President and First Lady -- talk about clasy! We're going to try to follow Pope Benedict for the next 5 days as he travels and talks -- our pastor suggested listening to the Pope rather than hearing the filtered "news" versions of what they think he says!
Marilyn, thanks for the link to the Pflaum site -- I'll add it to my list on my blog post about his visit!
Can you believe the schedule they've got him on? And he turns 81 tomorrow?????

And, granted he probably flew in style (ie not crammed in coach like we do) but still, he just got in from Italy and will start tomorrow rolling! Power of the Holy Spirit, y'think?

Here's a link from Catholic Culture that is a 113-page doc that includes all the text of the public celebrations -- including music for the Masses, readings, etc. Pretty cool stuff in there for those doing notebooks/lapbooks on this historic visit!

We have been having a wonderful time using all these resources over the last few days, and thanks to Cause of our Joy this afternoon we we rang our "bells for Benedict". You can see our fun day here!
Tomorrow for Pope Benedict's birthday we are having pork and sauerkraut and chocolate cake. We learned about Pope Benedict's favorite foods on this poster I printed out.

What fun to find out what everyone is doing to celebrate!
We ate jaegerschnitzel (pork, hunter style) and spaetzle (it is really from the Stuttgart area but we do love it so!) and lamb's lettuce salad (it's called mache at Trader Joe's, but my German friends call it lamb's lettuce, so we do, too).
Tomorrow I plan to bake a cake in honor of the Holy Father's birthday. Thursday TBD.
We used some of the Pflaum materials to review the Holy Father's life, and talked a bit about the parts of Bavaria and Rome we've visited. (I feel so blessed to have been able to take my children to these wonderful places. God has been good.)
If you'd like to add a bit of Bavarian/Franconian fun to your unit study, check out the polar bear cub at the Nuremberg Zoo...our favorite darling, Flocke ("Snowflake"). Be sure to watch some of the videos!

I was at my Catholic GP's office when Pope Benedict landed, his pager was going off as his wife was watching the Pope land and wanted him to know! After examining the baby he hurried out to see if FOX would replay it, how awesome is that? He was so excited about the visit and so were we, how great to have that camaraderie with Catholics on a day like today.
How I wish we were there! I loved what the Holy Father said about the priest scandal, he said "It is more important to have good priests than many priests."

We got home in time from our field trip in time to see him arrive before zipping off to CCD. I was so glad we did.
Lucky for me too, this site was a lifesaver. I had time to print out several great sheets to handout to my CCD class. We covered the Papal visit in class today.
Tomorrow and Thursday the children and I are home so we're going to use this site and Colleen's great ideas (God bless her!---like Stef, my sanity has been saved ) for a mini-study.

Fun! EWTN is playing "Pope Benedict XVI: My Vatican" a few more times. Excellent video. But it mentions the pope's favorite cuisine is Italian, but he sometimes likes to go back to his Bavarian roots.

Updating my own question. I ended up cutting a piece of white fabric, coloring the left side yellow and cutting out the coat of arms on the coloring page above. I glued the coat of arms and the flag onto a stick. Now ds can't wait to see the pope and wave his flag.
We're also reading these books and watching the specials about his life.

Thanks for the link Jenn. Did you see this, I had to copy it, and made me cry, we are so blessed.
"
"Q Mr. President, final question.
THE PRESIDENT: Yes, sir.
Q You said, famously, when you looked into Vladimir Putin's eyes you saw his soul.
THE PRESIDENT: Yes.
Q When you look into Benedict XVI's eyes what do you see?
THE PRESIDENT: God.

(Hi Jen!!! Waving)
Great article! There's a rumor buzzing that he might convert after his presidency, like Tony Blair. We can pray!
