Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The Princess and the Rainbow Coat
Retold by Fiona Waters
Illustrated by Fabian Negrin

keywords: princess, Cinderella, garden, prince, king, queen, masked ball

My 8 yo daughter picked this up at Half Priced Books yesterday and loves it! The illustrations are very colorful and beautiful! It has a Cinderella flavor to it which might be great for a "Cinderella's From Around the World" study but I am not sure which country this tale originates from.

Summary (from Anova Books):
One crisp morning, while he is out hunting with his men, a king discovers a mysterious creature covered in a rainbow coat made from the feathers of every bird of the air. To his amazement the creature turns out to be a young girl who will not, or cannot, speak. Puzzled by her regal air but humble appearance, the king sets her to work in the palace kitchens and thinks no more about it.

Sometime later he throws a sumptuous masked ball, but the lavish banquet is soon outshone when a beautiful stranger arrives. The king is captivated, yet in a second she has vanished and he does not even know her name ...

Looks very intriguing. Sounds like it would be fun to make masks and have a masquerade ball to go along. Thanks, Matilda.
