Maybe you ladies can help me.
I need a solution for keeping my baby safe from the sun while at baseball games chasing my other little ones. He is only 4 months (next week) so I can't put sunscreen on him yet. Today I had my mil with me so she helped with the chasing. We do have a canopy but I can't stay in there the whole time. If I put baby in a sling I don't have any shade for him.
Any ideas?
While I am asking, he got too much sun yesterday while someone else was watching him while I taught a co-op class yesterday.  I am wondering if I should put something on it or just leave it alone. It isn't very bad, just pink.

I would probably go with sunscreen at least on parts that aren't gonna go in his mouth.
You know.. which is worse.. using sunscreen a bit early or getting sunburned at that age.. sometimes recommendations just don't take into account the lives of large families
Also maybe finding some really lightweight outfits that will cover him more without being too horribly hot.
And I've made some baby "blankets" out of old sheets.. I've been known to drape one over a baby that I'm wearing.

Molly,
How about a large umbrella? You could probably find one at Target that is lighter-weight and plants into the ground, but can be easily pulled and and taken home. I have noticed a lot more of these kinds of umbrellas being advertised for the beach, with all the concern about the sun's rays. One Step Ahead catalog may have something like it, too, specifically for babies.
Hope this helps give you some ideas!

Thank you so much, Molly, for bringing this to my attention. My first two were late fall/early winter babies, so sunscreen wasn't even an issue until they were already six months old; plus we didn't go out in the sun that much. But with this one, well, we're going to have one t-ball game and two practices every week until July.
I honestly didn't realize that you weren't supposed to put sunscreen on ones so little. I have a sun hat for the little one, but I may look into what they have at One Step Ahead that's affordable and portable for more full-body protection.

Molly - the same thing happened to my little guy over the weekend - he got a little pink and it made me realize I need to get some sunblock. He refused to keep his hat on 
My guy is older - but my pediatrician says that a sunblock about 25-30SPF is fine for a 4m old. There are some good organic/natural/safe ones - I am doing my research - will let you know when I find them

My pediatrician recommended Blue Lizard sunscreens for young ones. I think it is Australian.

I saw Blue Lizard at my Giant grocery store, so it's more widely available.
But two years ago I bought the sensitive version and used it at the beach. I had some kind of reaction -- I looked like a lobster, everything burned, but it wasn't a sunburn.
I know this is about children's sunscreen, but I thought I would put it out there. I tend to get a reaction if I'm in the sun and reapply ANY kind.

I did read that the concerns about tiny ones and sunblock are that (a) they might have an allergic reaction, (b) their skin might absorb too many chemicals, and (c) that the sunblock might interfere with their already limited ability to regulate body temperature causing them to become overheated or dehydrated more quickly.
We don't use a infant car seat, but we do keep a carrier around for use in restaurants. I am thinking that I will probably try to keep her in the carrier and put the carrier in the big stroller and overlap the two canopies. I am also thinking thin outfits that cover as much skin as possible, and when using my Maya wrap and pulling the tail over her.
Of course, I'll be dealing with a newborn...hopefully very, very soon.

Hanna Andersson floppy sun hats are on sale. Cute and a great deal!
California Baby makes an organic sunscreen which can be used on babies if you can't keep them out of the sun all the time.
Hopefully, the combination will alleviate my worries.

Molly - this has been a helpful thread. Glad to know Hanna Anderson's hats are on sale!  and that California Baby makes an organic sunscreen! Both are great ideas! Thanks for starting this thread.

Thanks for the tips. I ordered my sunhat for my son, too.
From what I see Blue Lizard's Baby and Sensitive Formulas seem to be very similar to California Baby's products. For what it's worth.
As I was doing my research for Strollers, the Joovy has a see through sun shield. I'm sure there are other brands out there, but I thought that would be another way to keep them covered.
My sons are both fair in skin and hair (and little hair at the beginning), so when the hats come off, the scalps easily burn. Actually we're all very pale and sensitive to the sun. A lot of hassle to protect ourselves, isn't it?
