Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have any experience with these? It is a huge series of books written by Mary Kirchoff. My oldest ds (10yo) is very into mythology, dragons, knights, that sort of thing and I thought this might by a series that would work for him. He is also a reluctant reader, so I allow books for him that I wouldn't normally because I just want him to read! The librarian said they were for 12 and up but I don't know if that is determined by reading level or age appropriateness. I really don't want to preview this book , so I am hoping that someone here has experience with them.

Thanks!
Betsie

oh I'm such a geek!
I read ALL of them starting at about 11 through 8th or 9th grade. The first boy I ever got a kiss from noticed me because I was sitting in front of him in science class with a dragon lance book tucked in my science text so it'd look like I was doing official work.

I don't remember anything terrible about them, but that was when I was much younger and not reading with a mother's eye, kwim?

I think I'll see if I can find some of them this weekend and reread them for approval for my own boys and let you know. I do know that when I was in 10th grade (or was it 11th?) a new writer kind of picked up the series and me and my fellow computer programming nerds were horrified at the way it was butchered up. Always go classic and unabridged if you can was my policy even then.

I read these as a kid, before I knew any better!

Well, yes, as a matter of fact, there is some f**nication and some suggestive stuff. Also, the theology contained in them is totally wrongheaded. It is that good, bad and "neutral" all need to co-exist for the balance of the universe.

They are definitely out of bounds, imo.

eta: They are just a 3rd rate rip-off of Tolkien. How about having your ds read the Silmarillion instead? Actually, there are about collected 12 vols. from him now that would at least be really good writing!
