Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

If there is anyone here from in or near Gainesville, VA, or otherwise familiar with the area as it is today, I would love to hear from you on or off the board about living the Catholic homeschooling life there.

We would like to relocate somewhere else in the Northern parts of VA this year or next if possible, and are considering that area. Our price range is definitely on the "as low as possible" side (under $300k, preferably considerably lower) and we would even consider renting. The difficult part is figuring out when a low price really reflects a good deal. It's mostly the different neighborhoods I have trouble evaluating without really knowing the place.

Also seeking info about the commute to the Tysons area and to DC for my husband who is self-employed but visits clients at their offices.

Currently in western Fairfax County...

Theresa - I'm in the Holy Trinity Homeschooling group which is in Gainesville -- which while I've only gone to a couple of their activities, I can say that they are very active and have a great bunch of families!! (I'm just a bit away from Gainesville and life with littles isn't necessarily conducive to activities).

The new Holy Trinity Church is beautiful and has an adoration chapel. I think it's a great place to raise a family and homeschool.

I'm clueless about the neighborhoods or real estate. And have no idea about the commute.

I'm not homeschooling (yet!) so I can't really speak to that, except from what I have heard from others. There are a LOT of homeschoolers in this area, and it seems like they have a lot of activities and groups.

Even though house prices have dropped some here in the slower market, single family homes usually run well over $300K. You could probably find a nice townhome in that price range, though. (You probably know about high prices since you are from Fairfax county!) If you cross the very close border into Fauquier County, prices may be a little lower.

As for neighborhoods, there are quite a few in the Bristow/Gainesville/Vint Hill area that have been built just in the last five years. Because of the slow market, you might be able to find some good incentives offered (on financing or upgrades) on new homes. The best thing to do is to spend some time on www.homesdatabase.com just to see what the prices are like.
