Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Today is the first time in 20 years that one of my children are not home for their birthday. It is not even a grown-up child- it is my 14 year old beautiful daughter who is in the warm sunshine of Florida with her God-parents.    sniff-sniff

It seems strange to have to call her to wish her a wonderful day.

OK- I will go and have a little cry by myself now!

I know how you feel, Joann.

My oldest turned 17 the week we were evacuated due to Hurricane Rita in 2005. He came back to a hurricane-ravaged existence with his father and uncle to help with the clean-up. He spent his b-day working in the yard that morning then helping at the grocery store where he worked part-time to clean-up all perishables. If you can imagine what people were dealing with in cleaning out their refrigerators when they got home...It was an job.

I don't remember how my husband obtained edible steaks but that night the three of them sat around a campfire and cooked steaks.

The next year when he turned 18, his job took him out to the Gulf of Mexico. He watched dolphins skimming the water and the most beautiful sunset he ever seen in his 18 years of life.

Those are two birthdays he won't soon forget.

Life is an experience, ain't it? For our children and for us in letting them go.

I hope your dd has a wonderful time. Sounds like she's in a fun place...and she'll have great memories. So will you.

Haven't experienced that yet, but we always seem to have missing children on my dd's birthday! Makes it rather difficult to celebrate. This year she turns 13 and her oldest brother and dad will be at Philmont hiking! We will celebrate the week before with family in Philadelphia!

Lots of hugs for you!
